My mangrove refugium

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...2/127a7947.jpg

Built from some glass I had laying around

Now the scary part.... Drilling holes

daplatapus 08-08-2012 01:34 AM

Way scarier in thought than practice.... as long as you're sure it's not tempered :)

spit.fire 08-08-2012 02:31 AM

It's not, wouldn't have been able to cut the glass if it was tempered

spit.fire 08-08-2012 03:56 AM

I've drilled many tanks, I've even got a tripod drill, but this one scares me for some reason, probably because I put in the time to build this one

FitoPharmer 08-08-2012 02:29 PM

Cant wait to see this with mangroves in it. What are you planning to light them with? Also was the glass dirty when you siliconed it together?

spit.fire 08-08-2012 09:02 PM

The glass was spotless but I didn't have any masking tape, I'm gonna resilicone it and mask it off because I'm really not happy with the silicone job. It doesnt leak tho. I'm still debating wether or not to drill it on the back or bottom. If I bottom drill it for 3x 3/4" bulkheads I'll lose 2 inches of depth for an overflow but it will look real clean from the outside or I can drill the back, not loose any depth but I'll have hoses sticking out the back unless I build the stand to cover the back.

Here's my old refugium, its drilled through th back same dimensions just shorter

Best match I could find to my other stand in a spray can. To lazy to pull out the paint pot and compressor

Will be going in with the mangroves once the tank is more established

Love it ! I'm slightly bias towards mangrove use though haha.

Skimmerking 08-13-2012 05:12 PM

love it man looks real good

daplatapus 08-13-2012 10:25 PM

Yeah, that's pretty sweet. I might have to think of doing something like that in my sump room...

My wife sends her thanks... NOT! :D

molotov 08-13-2012 10:34 PM

What kind of sand did you use for that refugium?

spit.fire 08-14-2012 01:08 AM

Sugar sand mixed with some stuff I had laying around

Any suggestions on how much flow I should have from my return pump, I'm guessing I'm running around 250gph ATM which is approx a 16x turnover in the refugium. I was thinking to cut it down to 10x turnover and throw a hk nano powerhead in it

spit.fire 08-14-2012 09:38 PM

Now for the next tank :D same thing but 20x20x15 for freshwater soo I can get rid of my bowfront

lpsreefer 08-14-2012 10:12 PM

My mangroves grow faster with more flow.
I have my return pump at about 14X and I have two 1400 hydor power heads.
But I have 26 plants.

What are you running for lighting? I was thinking 4 12" t5's so I could keep a few zoas in the refugium but I have no idea how I want to mount it

lpsreefer 08-15-2012 01:19 AM

I'm running 4 led bulbs from home depot. I think they are 6500k. I'll check tonight.
Had it for just over a year. Works great.
But I have a mini fug on my other tank running old t5s also doing great.
