my Deep Sea Neo Nano waterfall tank

Its finally here! Many years ago I saw one of these at Safari Pets and ohhhed and awed over it every time I was in, but for one reason or another passed on it.

I started thinking about it a few months ago when I started getting into the mini maxi anemones, and what a wicked look down tank it would be. I did some enquirys and no one had any, but Japarto tracked one down sitting in Hagens warehouse somewhere back east..

My brand new 2008 Deep Sea Neo Nano!

The water goes into the two overflow boxs on the sides of the tower into a 30 gallon sump then is pumped up into the tower and cascades in a waterfall back into the tank, The waterfall doesnt disturb the water surface, making it a wicked look down tank

Nice tank... They have one over at aquariums west downtown vancouver where they sold it but no more as it was briefly discontinued..i saw reefbuilders.com stating they were updating to a newer model.

Also someone was selling one here for$500 a couple weeks ago.

Just saw one at Pisces in Calgary for $399. Considered it for a nice frag tank.

SeaHorse_Fanatic 07-07-2012 05:44 AM

Sweet. I've always wanted to set up a shallow look down clam tank

Today I spent most of the day rearranging my fish room so I could put this new tank against the back wall. Jeeze I have acculmulated lots of crap!

The plumbing was very straight forward.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y24...a/IMG_0072.jpg

I'm using an eheim return pump I had instead of the one that came with the tank. It was more of a pond pump rated at 800GPH. The Eheim is rated at a tad less than 700 GPH. I like Eheims and never had one fail

Filling the tower with fresh water for a test run... all these little holes are supposed to move the water around the tank.

I really like the waterfall! Ive seen some people complain that it has to be wiped down every few days or algae will grow.. guess I will just have to deal with that, or learn to embrace my algae slide.

Im going to make a few changes. I went to Rona on Bay and bought some elbows. Im going to put them into the overflow boxs so that I can put a strainer in there to keep the snails out. I need to cut the elbows down a 1/2" tho, as they break the surface screwing up the skimming effect of the overflow boxs. Oh! Rona has their $20 petunia baskets on sale for $4.99!!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y24...IMG_0085-2.jpg

Also Im not happy with the amount of water that drains back down to the sump when i do an emergency pump shut down. All those little holes in the bottom of the waterfall box tend to keep refilling the box, even after the level goes down past the bulkhead. It drains down a good 2" before it pressurizes enough to stop the back flow.. and when your tank is ony 12" to start whats way too low. I put an elbow into the waterfall box too, and add a standpipe of about 3-4". This keeps the box fuller, which increases the down pressure so the water from the little holes doesnt push back up.

Going to let it run tonight with fresh water, then tomorrow drain it and put in new crushed coral and arrange my dried out branch rock. Then prolly fill it again with fresh water to rinse everything one last time. Hopefully i have the umph left to drain the freshwater, salt er up, and fill up the sump with liverock to get the cycle going.

Are you thinking about installing a check valve to stop the problem? We ended up having to put one on ours because of the position of the bulkheads draining too much into the sump and found it was a nice, easy, cheap and quick solution.

I'm very excited to see how this tank turns out.

paddyob 07-08-2012 02:28 PM

I have never actually seen one of these tanks anywhere. ANYWHERE. Were they discontinued or something? Maybe one of those trends that died?

Aquattro 07-08-2012 02:35 PM

I almost bought one of those when he had them in store, thought it would make a great clam tank.

don.ald 07-08-2012 02:40 PM

Well, is it finished yet!!
J&L have those red nems on their website:shocked:

Leah 07-08-2012 02:48 PM

Duker 07-13-2012 05:14 AM

It's in it's boring stage right now..even tho I filled the sump with established live rock I want to let it run a couple of weeks before I switch every thing over.
( or maybe Sunday:mrgreen:)

mseepman 07-13-2012 07:27 PM

I've seen a couple of these running for quite a while now and the only thing you have to be aware of is that the material they used for the waterfall gathers all the algae in a similar fashion to an Algae scrubber. It will require really regular maintenance. Otherwise, I loved the look of it as a frag tank or look-down tank.

windcoast reefs 07-20-2012 04:28 PM

Where are the pics!? It was pretty amazing last time I saw it!

Leah 07-20-2012 04:46 PM

I have sexy shrimps and two angelfish, a cherub pigmy and a white tail. Got lucky and they get along. I might add an Eibli but that may be pushing my luck.

mseepman 07-20-2012 09:16 PM

Looking great! Nice setup already. You move quickly.

SeaHorse_Fanatic 07-20-2012 10:07 PM

Gorgeous as always. Great job and such beautiful specimens for this unique tank.

christyf5 07-21-2012 02:51 AM

Just awesome!! Nice work Shelley!

PoonTang 07-21-2012 06:22 AM

Wow that is sweet! What does it have for lighting?

Leah 07-21-2012 10:38 AM

Sweet!

Borderjumper 07-21-2012 05:42 PM

Thanks for all your kind comments! It is coming along and the nems are all starting to find their comfy spots. Im finding that we go and look at that tank much more than the others.. The nems all kinda move around so it's a new view every day. I'm using a Radion for lighting.

The tank is running good! I had to take out some of the rock, as the nems were going under, instead of onto them. Heres some pics just taken today.

Well its been running now for 2 1/2 months and its maturing very well. The nems have spread out and all found comfy spots for their bums and colors are holding.. if anything improving.

I did add an MP10 a month ago for more flow as the rics werent as happy as I wanted them.

Im still running skimmerless, mostly because ive been too lazy to pull all the rock out of the sump to make room for it. I think the nems and the rics are liking the water a little bit "dirty" so I think im going to keep it skimmerless.

The only thing I may change up is get the new lenses for the Radion.

Heres a few pics from tonight.
