Thinking on adding a sump or refugium
Hi all, I have my sw tank going, is been doing great and i have been thinking on adding a sump or refugium now. I have a phospate reactor, an ac, and a skimmer. i dont mind anything in there but the phospate reactor, doesnt look nice lol
I need ideas as i have no idea what or how to do this, my tank is not drill and the stand doesnt have holes at all but the back of the stand is open so i can make the connections there, the back of the tank is black so nothing would b seen. Thanks in advance |
they have hang on overflows. could easily use one and go into the back of the stand.

How big are they? i want to b able to put stuff in it like the heater, etc. I have couple of small tanks i could use too

Hi Claudi,
Have CPR CS50 overflow for sale or trade if interested... pm me. http://www.jlaquatics.com/phpstore/s...ct_ID=of-cs050 I am also in process of doing up a sump for my red sea max 130 but taking a lot of time due to my kids... lotsa sump info at: site of sumps: http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/s...g-sumps-15943/ <----------- see image middle page see image: http://www.fishforum.com/userpix/47_30sumpplan_1.jpg http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-01/gt/index.php and of course: http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html regs msjboy |
It's easy to drill tank and IMO a better piece of mind than the hang on overflows
|
I think i would like to have a sump under the main tank instead, as i have been looking online and this hang ons dont have much space if i want to hide stuff in it like reactor, heater etc
I have seen that u dont even need to drill? u can just add the pipes and put everything on the back? |

The hang ons you were looking at we're probably refuge. But if you drill tank for sump you can have a refuge in sump. I know some people do not care for this type but its mostly because of pods going through pump. But I am guessing that you want a refuge for cheato
|
I want something mainly to put all the equipment in and also i can use for growing stuff like pods etc I dont really want to upgrade as i just did not long ago, i started with a 29g in January and then upgraded to this 65g by a believe March i think
|
Sound like sump is best bet. Drill tank and design a sump to your liking. I literally just finished building a new sump tonight.
|
Isnt it better to have a refugium?
|
Why not have refuge in sump

your sump is going to be a refuge regardless of what you put into it, basically its where all your "crap" ends up to and since we generally dont keep animals down there its a safe haven for pods and other marine life to grow and feed from. |

Now i have to find out how to do it lol I started my tank not to long ago so i am still really new to SW |
These days many don't run a true refugium, or 'fuge', anymore
A refugium used to be a place where one would grow pods, macro algae, and usually would keep deep sand beds with LR So, are you looking to run a sump with some equipment and some chaeto algae ? Is this your goal ? If so, it's not really a 'fuge' per se, but a sump with chaeto Thought I'd try to clarify the topic ... What do you really want out of a sump for your tank ? Tell us what you'd like to have in it .... Sorry if I missed the true meaning of your first question after reading through the thread |

I started to think about it cause i want to hide the phosban reactor, of course that i would put the heater and other stuff in there too and would like to grow pods there also
|
So, you'd like to have in your sump;
Phosban reactor Heater What else ... I'm serious ... What do you want your sump to do / house ? It's a big change when your tank is not drilled, so, tell us what you want to put in your sump so we can help you with your equipment ideas |
Not really sure, i am serious :D
I am new at sw so hard to say at the moment but i do not like to c the hoses of the phosban reactor in the tank, thats why i started to think about getting a sump/refugium. I like the idea of having a sump in the refugium too, if i get one then mind as well put all the equipment i can in it right? |

I'm glad to see you are making an effort with your tank to expand it beyond it's current situation I'm a newb, so take it as it comes ... What do you mean when you say 'Not really sure, i am serious :D' I think this is a good time for you to clarify your true intentions I bought into this hobby with the thought of only spending maybe $7000.00 on a 75g tank Haha, good luck there .... I have found this hobby to be .... Costly, time consuming, stressful Wonderful, absorbing, time consuming, informative, and expansive in knowledge beyond my means So, could you clarify what you mean when you say what you'd like to do ... |
When I had freshwater tanks, it was my dream to have a sump
Now that I have a SW tank, I am SO happy that I have a sump, with ALL of my equipment in it The best part for me is my sump is in another room, so I don't have to listen to it  Whether or not you can place a sump in another room, or under your tank, a sump is a great addition to any tank system You'll add water volume to your system by doing so, so just do it !!! You won't regret it |
I'm afraid I may have led you astray with my tired posts
Feel free to contact me via PM and I will do my best to help you with your sump ideas  |
Blah, I'm tired
I don't want you to get the wrong idea about the whole sump thing I'll send you a PM and maybe I can come look @ your tank after I grab some frags from a buddy on Monday |
My idea is to hide all the equipment in it, I dont like looking at the phosban reactor hoses.
I will b putting it under the tank, I also have an automatic top-off (JBJ Automatic Top Off System) with pump, vertex titanium grounding probe and a Vertex RO filter system that i can use. I have couple of 10g tanks but i think they might b to small for a sump/refugium but i can look for one or a bigger tank. The stand has a divider in the middle so i have to measure inside to know how big of a sump a can add. |
