Purple Cross pics?

Who's got a good pic of their purple cross acro? Mine is huge, but not much color. In fact, probably the dullest piece in my collection.
I recall the original colony was much more brilliant!

tang daddy 06-27-2012 04:52 PM

Purple cross are one of the hardest corals to colour up, I find that they need alot of light to keep the brilliant purple, otherwise they just colour down to a drab brown....Which is why it's not in my tank....

I recall that Jamie had the original mid tank, and it looked great. Mine was directly under the MH, no purple. Now with LED, still no purple. Might have to remove it and make room for something purdy :)

You could look at Denis's frag sale photos. He has alot of pictures in them.

Hmm... I did save a bunch of Jamie's photos somewhere way back. Doubtful Id be able to scrounge them up now though.

I looked there first :) I couldn't really tell the colors.

Rich, yours does look more colored than mine, but it's hard to tell in the pic.

Pics didn't show up, but even Denis piece is abit brown.... Sorry Denis not trying to insult, me and Richie Rich$$ were at Denis yesterday and saw the purple cross which wasn't looking so purple, the colony Rich posted is probally the same colour as yours Brad....

Replace it with a sunset Millie or golden pink spathulata from Tim T, mine took about a month to colour up and is one of my favs out of many melting sps in my collection.

Which? The original above? I see it....

Ya, I've got 6 frags of nicer pieces sitting in my rack, so "if" I can cut it out, I'll replace it with something nicer

Back when I had one it was quite vibrant. I'll try to dig up a picture when I can but I am out of town right now.

christyf5 06-28-2012 02:43 AM

I'd take a photo of mine but then I'd have to clean the glass. Then I'd probably have to do a waterchange and vaccuum the bottom. Then the fish would have to be fed so they weren't front and center in every photo. Then I'd have to wait for the "dust" to settle.

Maybe tomorrow....

Don't put yourself in a bad spot with this, others will have pics, I'm sure :)

 Mine has never looked like the photo you posted. Its more a royal purple color and its always been that way. Sometimes I wonder if it is even a purple cross...

That pic is the original, although even when I got a frag of that one, it never looked like that :)
If yours isn't a PC, I can give you one, I've got lots just lying on the sand -lol

Rice Reef 06-28-2012 04:29 AM

I had recently picked a huge frag fron Denis but it is still adjusting in my tank so I'm not much of a help right now... May be in 6 mths?

Maybe, maybe not. I got a huge piece from Denis also, and figured it just needed some time, but it's never colored up like the original (see pic above)

Jaws 06-28-2012 06:30 PM

Didn't Jamie used to run 10K lights? That pic you posted is top down too. There's a lot of color loss when looking through the glass. Have you had a look at yours from the top down Brad?

Oh ya, from top down, it's a perfect brown cross :) His piece looked like that regardless of how it was viewed. I just haven't seen another one that color.

Are they mega light wanting corals? I'm thinking maybe I'll move mine and blast it. Its about 5" under water and my lights are about 6" off the water right now. I could move it up/lights down just to mess with it and see if I can get it that color?

No, mine sat right below the 400w, didn't matter.

Aquattro 07-04-2012 01:07 AM

Greg, that's the closest I've seen to Jamie's original, mine sure doesn't look anything like that!

Although deleting the pic after I posted probably doesn't make sense :)

Wow you were quick, it was only up less than a minute. Sorry after I posted I realized that was a Cali tort. They were fairly similar. I'll find a shot for you.

Snappy 07-04-2012 05:45 AM

Ok here is a shot of my colony of Purple Cross first in Jan 2008 & again in June 2009. I got a 1" frag from Jamie back in 06 I think.

I believe the "purple cross" to be A.austera.

Snappy 07-04-2012 06:00 AM

Probably my favorite coral I had from Jamie but lost years ago was the "bubble gum" acro. I'd love to find a piece of that one if you have one or know anybody.

Nope, haven't seen that in forever. Last person I knew that had it was Marc. It was rather prolific though, so should be around the Vancouver area somewhere. It was more temp sensitive than most pieces. I had about 10 pieces years ago that all RTN'ed on a really hot day. Everything else was fine, just that species...poof :)

It can be a tricky one to keep it's color. Bright & purply one week and brown the next.

Agreed, mine is closer to the second photo you posted although sometimes it has a tendancy to be a bit brownish depending on the weather or if I'm looking at it from the left

you are to funny Christy...made me laugh! Thanks girl

What does the "bubble gum" acro look like? Could you post a picture of it from Jamie's TOTM article?

That's what I was thinking just by looking at the pictures. If it is indeed Austera, it shouldn't be too tough to color up - although I've found Austera to be CRAZY awesome in medium nutrient tanks (rather than low nutrient or ULNS).

You still have this piece Greg? Maybe I'll order one from you and try my hand...I have medium light (at best) and medium nutrients. :D

Slyguy00 12-19-2014 02:25 AM

My austera looks way different then my purple cross does.
