Someone explain me some math..
So I've just opened my first Elos Ca test kit, and reading the instructions, the math goes like this
50 x number of drops C + 10 x number of drops D eg - 8 drops of C = 450mg/l + 5 drops of D + 50mg/l =total Ca of 425mg/l not when I was in school it weren't.... |
Elos directions make my brain hurt.
|
I had an elios kit.. I solved the math problem easily,, I gave it to Jake!

1 drop of c = 50. so when you get to say 400 and the colour has not changed switch to D. +10
so 8 drops of c = 400 then add on drop of d and if it changes then your ca is 410. if it takes 2 drops of d to change colour then its 420, and so on. |
All I know is 1+1=2

I usually add 7 drops of C (350) and then switch to D so as to not over-shoot the mark. If all goes well I add 7 drops C (350) + 7 drops D (70) = 420 |

just use API much easier and accurate enough. and when it's not and you get Pi$$ed it is cheaper when you pitch it :mrgreen:out the window

The kit is easy enough to use, although my test showed Ca at 450, which is higher than I would have expected. Salifert generally gives me about 420. |
ok now you have to mix a batch of salt and test!

I've found Reef Foundation Pro Test Kit to be quite accurate (tested against calibration fluid) and easy to use. Straight forward directions, no math, no drops and very granular if you want it to be.

Maybe we should be checking to see if the instructions have an expiry date not just the reagents? Geeeze.
I can't say I noticed the bad math example before on the instructions but it's been a long time since I looked at Elos Ca test kit instructions in detail. The last kit I had was also consistently giving me bad readings of .. interestingly enough I think it was always 450 as well. I can't remember for sure I'd have to check my notes but I stopped using the Elos Ca test kit. I like the Salifert best. I did pony up for a Ca checker from Hanna but it has its own issues (basically you test 0.1ml of tank water which you have to add 0.9ml of lab grade distilled water (doesn't everybody have this? I carry some in my wallet just in case because you just never know when you're going to need some lab grade distilled water) and when you're doing a test on such a tiny sample it just has to be prone to fluctuating readings, I would think .. esp if you cheap out and just use "regular old vanilla RO/DI" instead of "lab grade distilled water.") |
1+1=2 Anything else I can help you with?
|
I'll check the frag tank, if I get 450 on that, the kit goes in the trash. Or I'll give it to Jake :)
|
Sailfert here, Hanna checker for Alk - not that this really helps you
|
Lab grade distilled. Geez I've just been using regular old distilled. It is the 0.1 ml of tank water that gets me, so easy to mess that up if you are not super careful.
Anyway, I used the Elos Ca kit before I got my Hanna and it seemed to be okay. Quote:

Lol yeah i think I have! Tank/ fish room is gonna get crowded really soon! I find that the elos kits are all kinda funky. I usually test salifert and then elos and try and change the math on the elos kit to give me the exact same result as the salifert kit. Takes a couple of tries, but it gets me the best result. |
