Looking for fathers day gift ideas
My dads birthday and fathers day are always close together so I usually do just one gift. Its usually some sort of tool or such as my dad has quite the collection. Because of this we've gotten a lot of what I would call "one time use/neato!/he'll probably never use that but whatever" tools. He has pretty much every tool (carpentry/mechanic) and its gotten to the point where if Bob Vila is selling something new at Christmastime at Sears, I'm running out to buy it. Then Bob Vila stopped doing that and thank god Home Hardware picked up the reins on that dealio.
Anyhoo, my last two ideas just got shot down because, well, he apparently already has them  The ideas were 1. a laser temperature gun 2. a cordless digital inspection camera. While I understand that these two items would actually be used by someone, my dad is retired and frankly, these fall into the "neato!" category for him  So my question is, thinking along these lines, does anyone have any other neato! suggestions? Switching to chocolate or booze is out as he is a diabetic (that was suggested by a co-worker). |
does he do anything other than fix things??? Like golf maybe?

Does he BBQ?
I received a Grilling Class from my wife and kids and I think it's a great gift. It's practical and could start a bit of a hobby. |
sadly no, he doesn't have much for hobbies. he has a greenhouse which is his newest obsession, however he's already bought all the whizjammers he needs for it.
|
sounds like you should buy him a new hobby

LOL, believe me, if I could think of one I would!! |
My dad loved model planes and actually won awards many years ago when we lived in Toledo and Toronto. We bought him one a few years ago, he retook flying lessons, but he's really shaky and couldn't control them. The building kept him occupied for weeks though...

If he has a greenhouse then gardening of all types will follow and there are as many "neato" things for gardening as there is for carpentry

I agree with Marie.. How about a gift cert at his nearest Nursery? he's going to be looking at lots of different plants and stuff.. Or deliver him 20 bags of good potting soil! |

I got my dad a Chia pet one year lol he actually used it too! I'd go over for supper, and he'd be watering it or "trimming the bush" ;) the chia's bush:razz: |
I enjoy it when my boys show up and we all go out for dinner or we BBQ or do something. that's kind of a cool gift...don't need anymore gifts to hang in the shed:mrgreen: I like the things you can use up and then they're gone.

He sounds like he would like The Lee Valley store. I get a gift card from there every year and a mail order catalog. They have a lot of great unique products for carpentry, gardening, and a variety of other things. Even great toys.

My dad loves gardening as well, so rather than wait for Father's Day, I paid for all his bags of Miracle Grow potting soil, sea soil, and a bunch of vege seedlings and thornless raspberry plants. Better than another ugly tie :biggrin:

Gift card to a favorite restaurant usually is something a Dad will enjoy and use. You could make a fun gift basket, pick a theme like coffee and teas or movies or something he's into. For example a movie theme: DVD movies, popcorn, movie theater gift cards, homemade diabetic goodies to snack on.

So what did he get? I'm curious.

Does your Dad have the fans in his greenhouse that mist ????
A backup genny ? A new garden hose for his water supply ? Some barrels for rainwater ? New watering cans ? Some shelving to store his ferts ? Bags of seed ? New sticks for his plants ? |

The best things I could think of were a remote thermometer so he could monitor the temperature from the house. He already has those louvered vents that open at a certain temperature but he likes watching that kind of stuff. Now if they had an app for his phone, he'd love that  The other thing was a mug with his grandsons pic on it, kind of boring but thats the best I could do, probly too late for that as I haven't gotten it made yet  |
Give him a reef tank and then tell him it's a greenhouse for corals. Something for him to do indoors during the off season.
|
Damn is it fathers day today? A phone call.
