dwarf bicolor?
I have a dwarf cherub in my reef, he is very well behaved. I have softies lps and sps, he picks at the algae on the rocks and glass, thats about it. also eats algae off the hermits/snails lol.

Bicolors are notorious coral nippers so your coral will very likely be picked at, and they can kinda be dicks (in a tank with limited territory this can end badly). Plus, with a fish that reaches 6" I would consider a 30 gallon too small.

agreed, I read up and asked a lot of questions before risking an angel, and found that dwarf species have the best track record
1-Dwarf cherub having the best (or so I read)
2-Dwarf Flame angel
3-coral beauty

in that order, again this is just what I have read, and been told by lfs and fellow reefers. My experience with my cherub 3 months in is very positive I would recommend them above all. but its always buyer beware and probably a 50/50 chance of getting a bad one

All the angelfish mentioned so far in this thread are "dwarf", in the centropyge genus.
Good thing that your cherub (C. argi) is well behaved. Most of argi I have seen and heard about are little devils.
I also agree that bi-color is a little too big for a 30 G tank consider that bi-color is territorial, comparing to other centropyge.

I had one years ago in a 72 gal and it was holy terror.

I have a emperor, blueface, majestic and french angel in my tank and im not worried about them touching anything.... I had a bi-color in there for 3 days and it got sumped cuz it tasted everything before eating 3 LPS colonies

mohammadali 05-12-2012 06:00 AM

what if i add flame angel instead bi-color angel ?

rastaangel 05-12-2012 06:17 PM

No angefish is ever safe, your always taking a chance especially with any LPS and zoa. SPS are usually safer being as tho they dont have large fleshy bodys or tasty slime on them.
I attribute my sucess to the fact that all my angels were very small when I got them so they never aquired that taste in nature or learned it from others.
But on the same note even tho theyre being perfectly behaved now doesnt mean they might decide they wanna eat them tomorrow
Either take the chance and risk your corals or stay away from angelfish

I have a flame, halfblack and bicolor in a 200g. They all get along pretty well and have lots of space. I have zooanthids, mushrooms and Lps and after about 6 months I have yet to see them nip at the corals. The halfblack nipped the clams to death however :( Im pretty sure clam mantle mucus is like crack to dwarf angels!

Anyway I agree a bicolor is too large for a 30g. Like everyone is saying your always taking a chance with any dwarf angel in a reef. You can try a flame just make sure to keep it well fed. Give it nori seaweed tied to a piece of live rock to munch on instead of your corals. And definately the smaller the better. What about the cherub angel that some people have mentioned?
