Would you use a coral reference database?
I have been looking around on the Internet and have yet to find an all inclusive website for coral and fish information
Is there interest in something like this? I could make it happen. |
Go for it make an iPhone app too
|
you have my support and +1 internets to you for coming up with the idea
|
Nice quick replys! I'm liking this. Anyone who is really interested should post so I can gauge how much support I would have.
If enough people are interested this will be a go |
hey man if you need any sort of support (financially as well), i am willing to donate towards this
|
What type of data are you proposing?
|
git r done
|
Coral compatibility, light requirements, natural location, etc
Anything you could want |
Do it :) this would be invaluable!
|

'You mean like this...
http://sdmas.com/corals/species.php' something a little less scientific and more hobby oriented would be better Pictures of the fish or corals, preferred tank parameters (flow, lighting, etc) Feeding or dosing requirements, etc Most times when I am looking up fish or corals that I am unfamiliar with I end up at the LiveAquaria website...so something along those lines but not sales based would be very cool. |
the poor boys dreams have been ruined
nooooooooooooooo |
Hmm I didn't know about the live aquaria database. Would this this still be used if it was hobbyist oriented? It would be written by the community
|
That is a good reference Muck. The problem I find is vendors tend to name the corals instead of giving a scientific name(or the wholesalers don mark them) and furthermore everybody uses different lighting
|
i think this would be an amazing idea, sure there are hundreds of crappy websites online but the problem is that i have to navigate from website to website trying to find out if this fish is aggressive or not or if this coral needs this or this. i have to agree that i often find myself on libe aquaria because its really easy to navigate but the info seems incomplete.
i vote HECK YES!!! |
WIKI
|
The Zeovit Forums have a nice SPS area:
http://www.zeovit.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=98 I think this extends to other corals and fish as well but I've only ever looked in the SPS one. |

Well looks like it would still be usefull. I'll get rolling on this project |

I am sure if it was as easy it that, the science community would have done it already... or has already somewhere. But then again, there are a million resources online. Interested to see what becomes of this. |
Haha I don't have to be a marine biologist when crowd sourcing information. It will be wiki style so you can add/update descriptions at your leisure. Then there will be a complete hobbiest reference on the Internet.
This is the plan anyways. |
The Live Aquaria database is pretty extensive and user friendly. I think you would have to find some way to improve upon their info before building an entire database for yourself.
A Wiki is a pretty good idea though, I've subscribed. |
data base
i would use this all the time, especially if you make an app for android and apple os.

Blue World Aquariums started a "fish wiki" a little while ago. Its pretty cool with rewards for contributing. I could ask Spencer what he thinks about including corals and if we all put in some effort if could be a good resource for corals in no time. There is a scoreboard for the people who contribute the most, turns out RiceReef from here is the leader. Nice work Wayne!
Here is the link: http://www.blueworldaquariums.com/blog/wiki/ If corals were included we would have to come up with a better suited name... Aquarium Wiki? Reef Wiki? ....... Any thoughts? |
I'm just going to bookmark this post for the links

Im just messing around with different cms/wiki packages and figuring out which one will be best suited for the job |
I have an issue with contributing to Blue World's WIKI as it would be their property and that could cause some problems.
How about we either contribute to wikipedia.com entries by including a hobbyists section for each existing entry or create new ones as needed and then build a relevant index to the wikipedia.com entries. Or build new wiki from scratch. I think expanding on wikipedia.com entries is the best solution as it is independent, already hosted and already contains LOTS of coral and fish entries. |
Finally something to look at!

I have the aquarium handbook on my ipad and ipod..its pretty good FYI

Snaz, as a store we can offer real rewards for contributions. However I am open to removing the association from the store if that's what would push it to be a real benefit to the hobby. I'm interested to hear your concerns in regards to the wiki being our property...maybe that's something we could address? Not meaning to detract from the OP...that site looks nice. :) |

For now I will host the wiki on my own connection so people can have a look. Please bare in mind that it wont be useful until YOU contribute. Hopfully we can get a good database going whether its me or not. |
I say continue on with what you're doing. Your site looks great, and realistically I don't have time to make a lot of changes to ours.
|
Yes PLEASE!!
This would be a one stop shop app! Please do!

If everyone likes it I will consider getting it hosted and it will be permanently live and free to use  |
Help Needed
Today I was going to register a d damain name, either "reefdb.com" or "reefdatabase.com" but to my surprise both of these names redirect to a porn website :mmph:.Finding this out is quite annoying as you can imagine because even if I register a .ca domain it would take one mistake to end up somewhere you dont want to be.
This is why I need help, to chose a new domain name. Please give me some ideas and if I chose your idea you will be credited on the website. Thanks! |

Reefwiki is now perminantly hosted at reefwiki.ca
Check it out, and more importantly add something to give me a hand. |
