Beware of Scam

Please don't fall for the scam where a guy with an indian accent calls you and tells you he's gonna fix your computer over the phone.
They'll ask you to download software from ammyy.com!

They have started calling numbers in Canada. Dont fall for it!

sphelps 04-03-2012 11:30 PM

Who would?

It's an easy out, find a location in or around the city that telus can't service, call them up and say you're moving there (provide your "new" address) and want to transfer your service, they'll say they don't have service there and that'll be it, you'll be let off the hook free of charge.

You'll lose your phone service with the move order

And what a you using to test it?

If you wanna pm me your home number I can test your line tomorrow.

I can test your train rate directly from the equipment. Not some server in Calgary like speedtest

yeah Speed test.net, also had some techies test it before for the most part we get around 18-23mbps but avg 19. no biggie I'm just giving you a hard time ;) when you answer the phone do you ever go "hello I am Aptar thank for calling telus" (in an accent?) haha thatd rich.

makana 04-04-2012 12:10 AM

you'll notice it says up to 25. There are no guarantee. DSL is a distance based technology, the closer you are to the source the better the speed you can get. You also loose bandwidth to traffic overhead, and latency of the routers between you and the speed test server. Its the same marketing jazz that makes people believe they can actually achieve the wireless speed advertised for their router.

Telus guarantees the speed between the model and the dslam

Telus isn't that bad.... sometimes, always tried to fix stuff they screwed up. (like optik tv)
I wouldn't be too dissapointed with your 19mbps ;) I've got telus too and that sites telling me i've got a whopping 1.07mbps dl speed.

spawn 04-04-2012 12:34 AM

If people with accents or anyone for that matter, phone our house I play games with them. Especially poll takers, tell marketers, wrong #'s. It's the best when you play the game of seeing how long someone will hold for if you keep answering the phone & then saying I have to get my dad. trust me it works well. :P

reefwars 04-04-2012 12:40 AM

my telus experience in edmonton last year lol:

switched from shaw to telus, they had their guy come out and hook up our internet, guy messed around for a while and said "there ya go all good" i had thought great, so he leaves and i try it out....it doesnt work..

i called back and after trying a few things she says she will have to send the technician back out, so i ask her when and she says wont be this week.....now im a bit mad

i make the appointment for after the weekend and its for like 4pm...im home waiting and nothing....finally at around 630-7 i hear a knock at the door, its the telus guy

so he shows up with no tools, 2 hrs late and he gets right at er.....after about 5 mins he says they need to run a new line....im thinking thats gonna take forever.he makes me an apponment for the next day and i didnt need to be there.

when i got home the next day i checked the internet...nothing, when i let the dog out the backdoor i noticed a bunch of wires dangling over my fence and left in the grass hooked up to the pole but not to anything else.

i called telus AGAIN and telll the lady what i came home too and she says she will send someone right out, again now at like 7 in the evening the very same technician who orgionally hooked my internet shows up ....WITH NO TOOLS......he goes into the backyard and makes a phonecall, he comes back to me and says the guy who was here earlier had quit....again they will send someone out the next day.

so the next day its all gone no wire the jobs done, so i call telus to get it activated and what do you know they cant get it going...i say so what now......

guess what?? appointment again....next week..fml

3 weeks pretty much, 3 days off work and alot of frustration......i got a bill at the end of the month billing me for full charges.....you can better believe that was dropped the second i called in looking for blood lol

anyways telus sucks but shaw sucked too:P

bahahah when i see a number and something like texas or florida comes up as the name i know its some sort of market scam so i answer the phone " joes pizza" .....they almost always hang up right away.

sometimes ill just answer the phone but just say nothing, and then do the repeater:P

MarkoD 04-04-2012 12:45 AM

Ok I made this thread to warn people about these phone calls. Not to complain about your Internet service

I like it!

Telus.. Horror stories. I have many as well. The last one was when I signed up for their 1-yr promo a couple of years ago. I made sure I took a screenshot of the promo because I didn't trust them. Within 4 months, they secretly raised the price back to regular price. I called to tell them that my 1-yr promo hasn't expired yet so they reverted the price for me. Next month, they secretly raised the price again. I called again and the price was reverted again. The next month, they secretly raised the price again. I've lost tracked of how many times I had to call them. It was at least 4 months that this happened. This is just one example out of many over the past 20 years or so. :)

Just think of them as bumps...at least it's staying at the top.

As far a telelmarketers go, handing the phone to a 3 year-old is also brilliant.

patd 04-04-2012 01:13 AM

The reality is that tech support from any of these mass service providers is a joke. If you're very lucky you might get an individual who is competent but the vast majority of the time you are dealing with very low skilled (and low paid) people who hate their job and could care less about technology or customer service.
Furthermore, it seems the bigger the company, the worse it gets.
Try dealing with tech support at DirecTV - the US satellite service providers. You will discover a whole new level of incompetence ....and frustration.

I had them scammers calling me saying they work for mac and windows and that if i didnt do what they say my computer would crash.
I hung up and they repeatedly called back over a period of two weeks. I got fed up (they kept waking my kids up) and cursed the guy out....the guy then tweeked on me for not talking like a lady, saying a lady should not talk like that to a man. I hung up and he repeatedly called me like every min for over an hour till I took my line off the hook. I ended up calling the cops cuz it got so out of hand, but they said the numbers were coming right from Pakistan. so theirs nothing you can do about it but have the number blocked by your phone provider. Problem is they call from multiple numbers. They harrassed me for weeks. Only stoped when i stoped answering my phone. I had them calling from 5 different numbers all hours of the day. :twised:

Yep that is a good one. Telemarketers beware--any calls to my house will be taken by my 2 year old daughter. She always has a lot to say.

Back when I had a land line this is what I did too. Got rid of the land line, no more telemarketers.

noirsphynx 04-04-2012 01:43 PM

They've called my house several times telling me they were calling to fix the problems on my PC and I say "oh really, cause I have a Mac", they instantly hang up, lol.

BMW Rider 04-04-2012 03:29 PM

I suppose next your going to tell me that that PayPal update email I filled out was a scam too

Best way to get ride of them!

A few months ago, I started getting a lot of these calls. I'm a linux server guy and I dont' have a windows computer or max anywhere in my house. As once in a while I have to deal with clueless end users I figured I would have some fun, and this is what I figured out:

They are trying to get your credit card number, or have you install malware on your computer. To make money they have to sucker people in, but do it fast enough that the profit is more than their wages. So, make it not worth it.

I figured I would go with it and "pretend" to be a sucker, but a really, really, really dumb one.

IE: "Start button, nope I don't have one --- in the bottom left, nope I just see a clock, oh, my other left, yup I see it. Do I right or left click? Once or twice? OK I see a menu -- click on run, I don't have that button"

I kept them on the line for a good 20 minutes until it got to the point of me saying -- "Have I wasted enough of your time? Good, call again and I'll waste more!" and they haven't phoned back ever.

BTW --- speedtest.net is only good until you get a really fast connection -- I've tried it using my 1000mbps line (both up and down) and I only ever see about 20-30 down and 2 up. No where near what my dedicated fibre can do :(

It really depends on how loaded the testing servers are, and I've never really seen anything above 100 on any connection.

I was planning on doing the same thing but the only telemarketers I get are political parties trying to get donations, as if my taxes aren't enough for them. I think it would be a lot of fun!
