Any one participate in "Earth Hour"?

like the title says, obviously your not shutting down your tanks for the hour or hours, but does anyone participate by reading a book for an hour versus watching tv, or turning off that light in the basement that you left on earlier? I'm not a hippie, just "gauging the interest" in it :)

The last 2 years my wife and I turn off the lights and go outside for a walk for an hour, with her being to pregnant to walk to far, we might read a book together tonight.

What will you do?
(and lets keep it positive ;))

SteveConn 03-31-2012 11:53 PM

I didn't know it was today :-/
We're pretty concious of conservation. I took care of recycling today and have been turning off lights not in use. I guess we'll go for a walk later too

intarsiabox 04-01-2012 03:33 AM

I turned out the basement lights while I was watching a movie if that counts. I suppose the subs, amp and big screen probably had a negative effect though.

 well think if you hadnt have turned them off they would still be usin juice while you watch a movie, so, I guess it helps ;)

I'm just chilling enjoying the last bit of peace and quiet before the baby comes, researching sps, and chatting it up with all you

intarsiabox 04-01-2012 03:38 AM

Same as I do every year..............keep on doing what I'm doing because I'm to busy to stop and turn all my power off for 1 hr. it would take me about 3 hrs to get everything back on and set right so I don't have time.

Hope to be changing all the MH's to a very high efficient T5's & change the MH fixture on my frag tank to LED's as well.

I will only do it if BC Hydro will stop declaring billions of profit.
The reason is that they did not invent water nor does it belong to them.
It belongs to the planet and all people.
Don't get me wrong they do deserve good salaries and good life as well as they need reserve money for the infrastructure and repairs.
My point is this should be non profit because of the above point.
Also on that note, our planet has iron core and it rotates as well as it has a magnetic field so my question is: "WHY ARE WE PAYING FOR ELECTRICITY?"

I use electrostatic speakers, so they are always plug in and turn on, they have 5k volts going through the panels :(

reefgirl189 04-01-2012 02:49 PM

When is your baby due Nano? Any names picked out yet?

As for Earth hour, I made myself a tea and chased my son around the kitchen island. We were playing "Monster". It's so cute to watch him laugh and try to run faster than me. He's actually pretty damn quick for being such a little guy!

Nano 04-01-2012 04:12 PM

She is due April 28th but I'm thinking it'll be a bit earlier. Her name will be Ava Maureen Hobden. :) can't wait

ScubaSteve 04-01-2012 05:37 PM

I used to participate in earth hour until I started doing clean energy research and learned how the grid really works. When you plug something into the wall you're not plugging into a giant battery, the power isn't stored there waiting for you to use it. The power you use was produced only moments before and if no one uses it it it wasted as heat. So the power companies spend tons of time and money learning people's behavior so they can predict the load and match their output to the demand. Earth hour throws this out of wack. If tons of people shut their power off for just an hour on a single day it introduces an unpredictable fluctuation into the demand. So, to avoid putting people who aren't part of earth hour in the dark, power companies err on keep their output roughly where it should be for that time of day (though some of them may be starting to figure out earth hour). This results in a TON of energy just being wasted. Kind of the opposite effect of earth hour, huh?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a total hippy doing a PhD in the hippy side of science and i think the idea of earth hour is good, but once you learn about how it all works you start to see that it's a little misguided.

In one word...nope. Couldn't stand not to watch the Flames miss the playoffs once again.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info.....this goes along with how we live our lives every day. We try to lower our use on a regular basis. To take part in an hour long window per year is a good education for young kids but not much use in reality.

Aww I love the name! We just found out we are expecting another little one too, due December 1rst. I'm already sick of being pregnant so I can't imagine how uncomfortable your wife must be right about now.

Nano 04-01-2012 08:19 PM

Between swollen feet and running out of room in her belly and bruised ribs, she's actually holding up well. We can hardly wait

CONGRATS!!! That's a beautiful name!

We celebrated Earth Hour with my 3.5 year old and 1 year old by having a late dinner by LED Flashlight. I don't keep candles in the house, don't want to teach the kiddies to play with fire. Haha!

I turned off the LED's on my tanks, and my older daughter asks, "But, how are the fish going to see? They might be scared of the dark." I replied with "They are saving energy, they'll take a nap, and save their friends in the Ocean." And then AFTER Earth Hour, she kept turning every light off that we turned on. Haha!

Did anyone see the "Thrive" movie?
It is now free on you tube.

If anything take a look at what they have to say at starting at 30 min to 40 min about energy, why all these enventors starting with T esla and others are being immediately "dealt "with" ?
