New JBJ Drilled w/sump

This is my 24 gallon JbJ Nano Deluxe Build.
Heres a brief background,
Started a few years ago with SW, but with college in Winnipeg 14 hours away it was difficult. Now Im ready to start up again though.
I want to stick with a Nano because of price and ultimatly the convience of size. With my first baby just arriving space is hard to find... but I was determined to find something that worked. After debating the cpr fuge's available, I opted to drill the tank and get a sump. This increased my total water volume and gave me a place to store my mantis shrimp and equipment.
I also drilled 2 holes in the 1st and 3rd chamber divinding the Maindisplay and Maindisplays sump to add 2 pumps on a ocean pulse duo, then upgraded the lightin to 28g hqi lid. The bulb was garbage so I went with a phonix 14k and have never been more pleased!
Tank: JBJ Nano 24g deluxe
S-Stank (Garbage!! Do Not Buy!)
Lights: 28g jbj HQI with a pheonix 14000k (stock bulb was garbage)
Skimmer: Still juggling between my prizm and my tunze 9002
Sump: 10 aga, 3 chamber, filter sock, center fuge
Circulation: 750gph from sump, 350gph DIY spray bar along the center wall, 2x 265?gph on a ocean pulse duo timer.

1x Maroon Clown (worst buy ever, soo agressive)
2x Blue Chromis
1x Sixline Wrasse
Turbo snails
Hermit crabs

I Tried and Failed with my bonsai Aqauscape. But I learned alot, and next week gonna try again.

Pics coming Up in a few mins

I picked up the basics and started. The hardest thing was actually finding someplace to set it up where it could stay for 1-2 years. Getting the basics moved into the new place, I started on the tank build, after 3 days I ended up with this.

The blue Regal Tang is now out, so is the engineer goby. at 2.5 years old he was 11-12 inches...

My Ocean Pulse Duo... gonna swap out soon for a mp10

You can finally see coraline creeping onto my poorly exposed zip ties. This aquascape was a fail for me... but next week I will post pics on my 2nd attempt at a BONSAI AQUASCAPE!

After getting really bored with the tank, even though it was only 4 months old, I shut it all down and began to rip off the rim... it was a disaster, turns out jbj nanos top rim is actually used to cover the fact that the glass is horribly chipped and chaotic at the top. My 2nd Hate about the JbJ Tanks.

hey its just like mine, i sould start a build thread one of these days....

Reefie 02-17-2012 08:31 PM

Nice work so far!

I LOVE the stand!!! Where'd you find it?

b16a2 02-18-2012 03:04 AM

Reefie:
The stand is 1 of the 2 you can pick from for the 24 jbj Nano. Im sure your local sw fs can get them in for you. But be warned, this is very very unstable. The tank when full weighs in at 240+lbs, the stand weighs about 2lbs. I can hardly clean my walls without bouncing the tank around.

Cugio 02-18-2012 06:29 PM

Hey I've been following your video updates on youtube. Great to see the actual build process.

b16a2 02-20-2012 03:12 AM

Hey Cugio thanks!
Im having alot of trouble right now being able to acuratly re-create my color in videos. Even borrowed my cousin's camera... but alas, the pheonix 14k bulb is just to amazingly brilliant. I really cannot boast enough about this bulb. 55$ with shipping to my parents Sandpoint cabin in the states.

I work at a lfs here in town, and recently have had the opportunity to order some really cool Acroporas, if they continue to survive and thrive for 4 more days, they will make their new home in my tank :)

Update

Took a video on the garbage camera. The link is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT0C8...eature=mh_lolz

I could use some ideas for plumbing? Proflex Sumps have a really nice hose, wondering I could find something similar?

Since getting rid of Dori (blue tang) and the engineer goby Ive noticed a much happier, stabler tank. The two were replaced with a sixline wrasse. Also got two baby clows wich, if they pair up, I will use to replace my maroon clown. Hes such a bully.

b16a2 03-04-2012 02:22 AM

In case you didnt check out the new video, here are some pictures from the same update.

Comments are always welcome, I need some constructive critisism! Be judgemental, my tank to be all it can be, which means all the kinks gotta be addressed.

Next update will hopefully be the stand Im going to start this week. :)

The Pico Tank where we are holding the two baby clowns for now.
The maroon clown is just too aggresive and independant for the nano cube that once the two small clowns mature (and pair up) they willl replace the maroon.

Im scared they may not pair up and mate, if they dont then I will have to purchase a mated pair :(

Two little feather dusters that survived my old blue tang constantly picking at them. Now safe in the pico tank.

This Anenome is the Size of a pennie :) fits perfectly in the tank, the clows have been curious, but still have not hosted.

This pico is starting to become a small hospital tank. I bought a peppermint shrimp for a few small aptasia polyps but the sixline wrasse wouldnt stop pickin at him, so into the pico with the shrimp, this actually is awsome cause he eats the food the clowns miss.

Small update

Hey all,

So some bad news, the ricordia I introduced (not sure if they were yuma or floridia) had cyano. I did notice some dark algea when I purchased them, but I was really hoping the Iodine bath and gentle scrub was going to rid them of the bacteria. Alas, I failed. I HATE YOU CYANO, x10! (thats alot of hating)

I picked up a coral banded shrimp last night after work, so far he is just hiding in the back :( Im not sure about aclimating livestock when the lights in the tank are off. I wont be doing that again though.

Today I picked up a tuxedo urchin with 3 zoa polyps and a nice green mushroom that the urchin has been carrying around. He is being drip acclimated as we speak.

The prices at Golds Aquarium cannot be beat! In the last two days my fiance and I (and our baby Liam) have made the rounds to all the reef stores, and still Golds has the best priced frags and some of the fish and inverts are cheap aswell.

THANK YOU GOLDS AQAURIUM!
Cheers guys

April update

April 12 2012 update.

New:
Maroon clown finally gone to a new home!
SML yellow tang (help with green hair algae)
White sand sifting Goby
Large Green Cup coral (pagoda?)
SML Acan frag
2x Flame scallop (my fiance loves em... Im not to interested)
Green star polyps! :biggrin::biggrin:

Im very excited for the gsp (green star polyps)! Ive always wanted a matt/garden of this flowing neon grass. We glued the gsp on the back wall of the tank.... keeping my fingers crossed. I re-directed spray from the spray bar to hit the back wall to keep the gsp moving.

Heres some pics.

The tank looks great. I really like that you've pulled the top off and suspended it. I'm sure that really helps oxygenation and to prevent it from overheating.

I'm wondering if there is any way you could build a black acetate cover of some sort to hide the contents of the back chambers from the front view? I'm thinking I'd like to suspend the top of mine, but I'd still want to try to hide the back chambers.

soaptray 04-12-2012 10:19 PM

GSP is fun, but before you know it, it will take over your entire tank. I got clumsy and now have it everywhere! :D

The Pico is nice, and your nano is coming together very well! Keep the updates coming!

b16a2 04-13-2012 06:57 PM

Hey thanks soaptray! Someone IS watching this hey? Im encouraged by this.

I can only hope my next problem or bump in the road with this tank is having TOO much of any coral
If you still have some, Id love to purchase it from ya?

ruslicus 05-16-2012 10:10 PM

Great setup. I have JBJ 28Nano LED version and was wondering how did you do your plumbing with the sump. Did you drill the tank? Thx
