Help! Any appliance engineers around here?
I broke my Kenmore oven :twised:
I was replacing the right side oven light bulb & screwing in the new one when there was a loud pop & a bright spark. The result is my oven & digital display has stopped working but my stoves all work fine. I opened up the back & didn't see (to my untrained eyes at least) a fuse/breaker there. I thought it'd be behind the control panel somewhere. Is there a fuse/breaker somewhere that I need to replace/reset? Or did I kill the control board? Is it a big complex job to replace it? Or is it reasonably simple? Anyone in the area able to come fix it? Thanks. . |
I think all ranges either have fuses or a circuit breaker. On mine, If your looking at the stove, the very top above the knobs flips up, and there is a circuit breaker in there

Around the back, I removed the panels & looked all around but didn't see anything obvious. Anyone know if there's separate fuses/breakers for the stove and oven or will one fuse/breaker control everything? Cooker is a Kenmore C970-648295 from January 2007. . |
Since only your display is out, I think you fried something on the controls board. My display went on my wall oven. Cost me $85 to have them tell me what I suspected which was the control board. They wanted $340 for the board and another $85 to install it after they got it in. I got it for $240 and installed it myself. Had to figure out how to take the oven apart and then had to disconnect about 15 connections. Good thing I labelled them so I could reconnect them. Make sure you flip the breaker for the oven before you start taking it apart.
Good luck |
By the sounds of it, you've shorted out the control board.
|
Ya, sounds like you blew the control board. Before you replace it, make sure the bulb socket isn't spinning or it will happen next time as you're shorting out the socket wiring. And turn off the breaker next time you change the bulb too.
I don't know who you have out your way but in Vancouver, Handy Appliances should have the board if you want to replace it yourself. Their parts guys aren't very helpful answering questions, so make sure it really is the board you want to replace before you buy it. |
Here's a link to a manual
ftp://ftp.electrolux-na.com/ProdInfo...5995479457.pdf Looks like #24 or #25 is a breaker |
display out
It sounds like you burnt out the clock to me.
The clock also controls the oven function for temperature control. Mine burnt out with an electrical storm we had. My stove had no fuses on the top either. The cheapest I could find one was on ebay. you can look up the part from the manufacturer & then search ebay for the exact replacement. There were several new ones available for ourc stove & were half the cost of local shops. We did however opt out on ordering the part after crunching #'s we just bought a new one. Good luck |
hopefully just a breaker as panel is like $300 new

Engineers don't fix appliances.... Just saying
|
beneath them?

To the OP, if it's going to cost close to $300 to replace the control board, you might consider springing for a spanking new stove. |
Engineers, technicians, enthusiasts, hobbyists, geeks, lovers, sinners, annoying arrogant @$$holes or whatever... it's totally irrelevent.
Whoever has some knowledge & can help then great (regardless of what term you may use to describe them). Those being pedantic about nomenclature... meh... go annoy someone else - I have an oven to fix. . |
My Kenmore stove had one button (the start button of course) stop working and I had to replace the entire control board...$519 plus install and taxes. Tried everything to find it cheaper but had no luck. Are any of the controls that no longer function "touch" based?

When you do final resolve the issue, keep us informed. I have to assist my brother with the same problem. |
I want cupcakes too!

There was no intention of being annoying or any of those other words you mentioned it just seems to me that you're looking for appliance repair technician or someone with relevant experience to help you out. Perhaps you might get more attention from such people by calling out for something that actually exists.
I'm no expert on the field but as an engineer, since you're asking for one, I would suggest someone who breaks the control panel by changing a light bulb should not attempt to change the control panel or even attempt changing the bulb again... Best to call around and find a service technician that can fix it for you. |
Should have got a Maytag, their repair dude sits on his butt forever. I still say if the whole control panel is shot & you don't have anyone that can troubleshoot the components on it & need to replace the whole thing, get a new oven. A Maytag.
|
A Maytag would have been nice but the Kenmore was already there when we bought the place.
Anyway, looks like I do need a control board. The wiring for the bulb was loose & shorted the thing. Call out charge for someone to tell me the above $95. Cost of board, estimated at $200, labour cost to swap the board over &150. Add the HST & it's not worth paying for a repair. I'll see if I can pick up the part & do it myself but also need to replace the bulb cradle that corroded & caused the problems in the first place. .... Then! Everyone can have their cupcakes! Shelly, cupcakes for frags next time I'm on the Island? ;) . |
