Help ID, Crab?
1 Attachment(s)
I just found this crab(?) today, 8 legs and I cant see any pincher, sorry the photo is not clear but he is blending with the rock as well. There seems to be a molt right beside him unless it is a lighter color of same species.

I can't decifer between the rock and crap from the picture

Sorry my lights aren't ON yet and I'm not sure if he'll show up later but I'll try to take a better picture when I come home and if he still there. I'm not sure if its a crab because I can't find his pinchers but there are 8 legs. He is the one on the right circle and the other one is what I think is a molt.

Ok, I think i got a better pic. It looks like it has a skull in it's back. Is it a good crab?
|
Skulls equal bad right? :p
|
Looks like it might be a decorator type? Similar body to the one I used to have.
And they don't have large pinchers. |
yeah. I'm thinking it is a decorator so it should be ok right?
|
The question really is... Are you willing to chance an unknown crab?
"should" is not guaranteed. When in doubt... Take it out. |
I can try but he is always hidden. I only found him the second time by chance by disturbing my rock. If he hides in my main rocks which are all buried in the sand then I will most likely not find him.
|
Try baiting it out.
Somebody on here has some good tricks. Anyone had a successful trapping to share here? |
If you want to catch him lean a glass in your tank on an angle so he can get it. Maybe near a rock face. Then put some shrimp in the cup, wait til morning and bins your uncle you should have a caught crab. If not repeat, you'll get him not sure if you have a sump but they are safe for sumps. Generally speaking
|
I have used crab traps in the ocean before with some raw chicken inside them and had good success.
|
also once you catch him you'll be able to get a really good look at him to see what he ooks like and to get a positive ID.

Thanks a lot guys. I dont have a refugium yet but next week it will be setup.
|
I actually went to the ID, it is under the Majoidea SuperFamily. It is on the last two of the various unknown species under that family.
