Darn really

So I come home to find my lineatus wrasse face first in my rbta. Struggling to get out. I get it out and qt it right away but ten minutes is all it had left in it.
Sometimes I could give up.

Nano 01-09-2012 06:39 PM

That sucks! sorry for your loss, maybe your nem isn't getting enough to eat?
Still though, that's unfortunate

Proteus 01-09-2012 06:42 PM

It does suck. The nem rejected a silverside that morning. Just one of those days.

Nah the same thing would happen even if he fed it daily.

Sorry to hear Titus... dont get too discouraged!

Proteus 01-09-2012 06:56 PM

And of coarse the first words out of moma bears mouth " how much was that fish "

Lol always her first question when it all goes south. I hide receipts haha. Ten bucks baby it's all good

parkinsn 01-09-2012 07:01 PM

I had a blue carpet sting my PBT durring a tank x-fer. He ended up biting it so the carpet got a good meal

Lampshade 01-09-2012 07:07 PM

I learned from a wise man, fish cost $5 and coral costs $10.

Sucks about the loss, My anemone ate my purple firefish, I was ready to sell the anemone. But then again.. the fish only cost $5, so I should get another :P

lastlight 01-09-2012 07:09 PM

Sorry to hear.

Are these things really that great at catching fish (BTAs) or is it more likely the fish was already heading south and stumbled into it?

Had my own taste of death yesterday. Lost my last chromis (he and the other had been looking like frail old men for half a year. First his buddy proved I needed gutterguard on my overflow and the other really looked terrible all alone). I can't have a chromisless tank so I'm going to fix that this weekend.

Proteus 01-09-2012 07:18 PM

I have a feeling that the lineatus was chased by the labout wrasse as they still were not getting along.

I would have fed all my chromis to the nem if it ment saving the wrasse

Delphinus 01-09-2012 07:41 PM

Ouch. :(

Weird that must be one sticky BTA. In all the years I've had BTA (pretty much since I started in the hobby in the 90's) I've had BTA's but they've never posed a threat to anything alive since they're just not sticky or aggressive. Carpets and LTAs I could see taking down a fish .. BTA's .. in fact with my RBTA, I pretty much have to jamb a krill into its mouth otherwise the krill floats away after a minute or two.

Proteus 01-09-2012 08:00 PM

I wonder if they can tell the difference between live and prepared food. As my maxi is tough to feed. When I do feed I shake the minnow a little thinking that I create similar behavior as a live caught fish.

id have to agree i just dont think a bta has the power to catch live fish that size, the fish must have been on its way out or already dead.silversides imo isnt a good meal for bta's ...alot of people use them but theres better food out there, truth be told bubbletips do fine without feedings anyways:) sorry to hear about your fish

yesterday i was cleaning out from under my caret and he wrapped right around my wrist.....wasnt pleasant and took some pulling to get off lol:)

Gripenfelter 01-09-2012 08:06 PM

Anemones normally don't go "hunting". Usually the fish swims into them. I lost a sohal Tang that way. Swam through one of my biggest RBTAs.

BlueWorldAquatic 01-09-2012 08:08 PM

You lost another one? arrgghh!

My old Kuda seahorse grew up in a tank full of BTAs and he would swim under and use his head to literally push the anemone out of his way as he went hunting for mysis. It was very fun to watch. He lived for 2.5 years in that tank and never got stung or eaten. I was very sad when he died of extreme old age (seahorses usually have 2 years life span).

I was very concerned the other day when a new fairy wrasse went charging into my group of 4 BTAs (2 RBTA, 2 GBTA) and one of the GBTA was closed up when I looked in the tank a few minutes later. Fortunately, the new fairy has been out and about eating his mysis several times since then so it wasn't eaten.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I would love to have a Linneatus wrasse and be very POed if it was lost.

Proteus 01-09-2012 08:26 PM

I truly do blame the labouti as it was chasing him around. He wasn't dead when I pulled out of nem but I think exhaustion got him

Ken. I wonder maybe it's not ment to be. Lol let Mama forget about this and well be back . Haha. The flame is doin phenomenal though

gregzz4 01-09-2012 08:53 PM

Proteus 01-09-2012 08:55 PM

Just have to call my dealer lol

lastlight 01-09-2012 09:02 PM

Thankfully my list is a bunch of $7 fish lol.

I was curious as to what your fish looked like. Found it here (beautiful)!

Saltwater & Marine Fish > Everyday LOW PRICE Favorites! > Lineatus Fairy Wrasse

And looks like their low price is... $280!

I LOVE chromis. I'm a lot sorrier for your loss now =(

fishytime 01-09-2012 09:25 PM

Sorry to hear about your loss man.....I lost my lineatus to carpet surfing...... definitely not so much fun loosing a $200 fish:neutral:..... BTW nems is evil

gregzz4 01-09-2012 09:34 PM

That's one pricey fish
No wonder you're so x-tra cheesed

Proteus 01-09-2012 09:46 PM

Sorry for your loss and this hijack. But i've had an anemone for well over 10 years and have never once fed it. They dont need to be fed.

I usually never Feed my nem But was hoping with the excess food it may split.

daniella3d 01-10-2012 02:53 PM

I think that's the problem here..he was on his last leg from being chased and harrassed by the other fish and got too weak and floated in the anemone.

The fact that it was not eaten by the anemone is a sure sign that the anemone was not very aggressive or hungry. I would not buy another wrasse that risk such harrasment and such fate.

Brandon5555 01-10-2012 03:33 PM

thats pretty much a nems eating tactic. Any lively fish are going to be able to resist a sting or avoid the anemone all together. But if its exhausted and the current just kinda blows it into the nem, well thats an anemone at its best. Losing any fish let alone an expensive fish isnt fun. I lost a hawaiian red flame pipefish to a turf war recently. To me how much I pay doesnt justify whether i like it more than the others. I spent 8.99 on a blue/green chromis and to be totally honest, he was my favourite fish. He was my first marine fish ever. Sorry for your loss man, dont give up though, live and learn.

Son Of Skyline 01-10-2012 05:36 PM

Sorry for your loss. I've lost expensive (to me) fish and its frustrating to say the least. Having said that though, this is one of the risks you take when keeping a predatory animal like a bta. I agree with others that the wrasse was probably already weak and nature was just taking its course in your tank. Can't blame the bta for going "bta" on your fish. If this happened to me, I'd at least let the bta eat the fish. This way the fish didnt die for nothing.

apexifd 01-10-2012 11:17 PM

this just happened to me too. now I am curious to see if the mini maxi carpet can finished off it's meal.
