ID Please
Have these little round things in a few places in my tank, not sure what they are, they are flat and colorful.
Also this slug thing, only see it at night, but has gotten big. Thanks http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...3/DSC_0650.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...3/DSC_0657.jpg |
Looks like a sundial snail. Remove all you can find. Eat zoas.
|
I googled the sundial snails and it does not look the same. Although it looks flat in the pic, the shell is not flat on one side, its like one side of a peanut shell with the snail coming out of the end. The few times I've seen it, its been no where close to my zoas.
Any other ideas? Also, any ideas on the second pic - not a great photo but its close to the back of the tank. I have quite a few of these round things. |
Snail dosent look like a stomella , but i could be wrong . The description you gave fits stomella snail . The second pic is of some sort of nocturnal nem i have some too they seem to be fine.
|
definitely not stomatellas, I have a few. Although I'm not quite sure I agree 100% with Paddyob on sundial, after looking at some my self yours dont seem to have the flat shell on one side, but I dont know if all sundial share that characteristic. google Live rock hitch hikers theres a few websites, I cant remember off the top of my head, but the may be of more help
|
google Heliacus snail, I dont know if thats the same as a sundial. similar but different lol. and I agree with the nocturnal nem. check out http://www.chucksaddiction.com/hitchhikers.html for more on hitchhikers
|
I think it could be the stomella snail. Each time vie seen it it's been grazing on the rocks.
Will look up the nocturnal nems. Thanks! |

Looks like a juvenille Turbo. Do you have Turbos?
|
first pic, could be a peanut worm. beneficial.
|
I do have turbos, but I don't see this one during the day, only at night. Nothing is being bothered ATM. I've looked at a number of snail sites, nothing really jumping out.

I am wondering how big they are, I am doing my wake up at 4 am and look at the tank thing right now.. lol.. Turns out I have a bunch of little snails as well, They look identical to yours, but some are green shelled some are white, they arent in the corals, but on the glass and rocks. very tough to get a picture as they are literally about this small "O"
http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/...a/Untitled.png You can see in the above photo how small it really is, maybe1-2 mm at best, I have been looking online and since mine are seeming to be nocturnal, I am steering towards Collonista amakusaensis which are harmless algae grazers, its tough to say what yours are exactly as well as there isnt a size reference. From what I am gathering here mine at least seem to be harmless, I would like to find out what size yours are roughly. If I am correct in this ID they are a member of the tubinidae (turbo) Classified as mini or micro turbos. http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/...a/DSCN2499.jpg Very tricky to focus on these guys, but upon flipping them to look at their mouth area, they have the same "calcareous operculum" or what I like to call their front door, turbos have these too, it looks like a helmet kind of and when they retreat inwards this becomes apparent. I would try to get one of yours to see, if they have this "helmet" odds are its a turbo species and you are in fact safe. Any one agree or disagree? http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/SwSnails/Collonista.php Here is where I ID'd them, I thought perhaps sundials or heliacua at first, but as neither shows signs of a flat shell, and is showing the characteristics from what I am gathering online here, I doubt that is the case. and the fact that mine have the door/helmet kind of ruled it out, if you could find a characteristic on yours showing this, and describe it, then odds are in your favor I believe. Man.. that was some light typing for going onto 5am... lol |
^ rep points for big words and research? ;)
|
i have had these small snails in every tank ihave had. i never thoght they bothered anything. and yes thanks for the research...
the bottom pic i think looks like a mojano nem. are we all looking at the same thing? and the top pic.. +1 on the turbo snail. if i am looking at the right thing. edit: the top pic if what i am supposed to be looking at is at the bottom and partialy out of frame, then iimo looks like some kind of cucumber or nudi. |
It's definitely some kind of an anemone
|
Top pick is the snail, bottom pick has the anenome thing, it's in the middle of the pick to the left of the turbo snail.
I don't think it's a mojano nem, I have one and def not the same. I'm still looking to see what I can find. They are no bigger than a dime and haven't changed in size....yet. |
Yah I believe it's a turbo snail, sundials have a pyramid shape like a mini strawberry top hat and the checker patterns black and white, they also has a trap door....
|
I think the second pic is just a zoanthid. I have some that are that orange colour. Unless I'm looking at the wrong thing in the picture.
Here is a pic of mine for comparison. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...f/Zoanthid.jpg Quote:

I font know about that, your original pic looks a lot different, about the same size and coloration, but different color pattern, have you seen your snails as of late?
|
They do look like your zoas lee, but they don't close like zoas (I have a couple colonies as well). I have 3 different types of these anenome looking things, all look slightly different. One type has bright green tips, there's about 5 heads and they do close like zoas, not as nice looking. They are in an ackward spot so hard to get a pic of. I'm just keeping an eye on them at the moment and see if they spread.
Yes, that is a chalice in the one pic - my blenny picked at it constantly, hence the white tips. I'll watch the tank and see if the snail comes back out and try to grab it for a better picture. I'll also try to cut one of the nem things off and see what it does as well. Thanks for all the input. |
