reeflo snapper ???

ive been researching pumpps forthe 180 and all adds no mater what the pump is says quiet running. this tank is going in my livingroom last thing i want is a loud hum comming from the tank. thus far i have beenusing in sump pumps, quietone 4000 to be exact. and i love the silent operation. does anyone here use this pump that can give me some input id hate to purchase and hate it.

I have a snapper on the FOWLR, Jeff. It is very quiet, hardly hear it run at all.

Parker 01-07-2012 12:45 AM

I know it's not a Snapper, but I have Darts and they are far from silent. That being said they all make a varying amounts of noise. The Snappers may very well be much quieter.

I run the 6000 version and its pretty quiet. It's the quietest pump I have.

that is what worries me i have heard a dart in action and since i dont have fish room i cant afford to make a bad purchase and hate it. i will be insulating the stand for noise reduction but that will only work so much.

i am also looking at the 6000 i know those pumps are quiet just worried it wont have enough flow for the tank with the way im plumbing it. and ive read the quietone 9000 are noisy

The Grizz 01-07-2012 02:09 AM

Yes the snapper is quieter then that one but maybe you sould look into the Sicce pump. I hear they are the pump of all pumps.

jagermaier 01-07-2012 02:17 AM

I have the snapper hybrid, there's a definite hum but it isn't too obnoxious. My sump is plumbed to my basement so I'm not sure if it would bother me if it were in my living room or not...I'm thinking not too bad.

these look promising a little pricey but if they are silentas they say then it may be worth it

lockrookie 01-07-2012 03:02 AM

and i mean pricey due to shipping

jagermaier 01-07-2012 03:32 AM

I also hear that Iwaki (the one made in Japan) is a very quiet pump. You might want to check it out.

As you probably know I have owned a ton of different pumps over the last couple years. Best and quietest pump I have owned is the one I bought recently for my 180 build - ATB Flowtar 1800. Totally silent pump even quieter than the Eheims and the Water Blasters. Previously I liked and used the Eheims but not enough flow for a 180g although some people use them on 180's.

es i have purchased one of you quietone 4000 should have gotten the 6000 when i had the chance. but with my calculations i think im going to neeed atleast 2000gph min pump withhow im splitting the return lines within the rock wall design.. idhave to go with the 3200 model and thewife would kill me if i spent that much lol.. im a budget reefer aka cheapskate

Just go with a Laguna pond pump then which is exactly the same pump/motorblock but cheaper without the fancy volute and base plate. Also the Water Blasters are basically the same pump and very reasonabily priced. My 1800 will be split into two 3/4" returns and that should be plenty of gph at 1800 at 0' head

lockrookie 01-07-2012 07:48 AM

i should draw up my plan but it would taketoo long .. what i hope to do is 1" return split left to right halfway down tank then split again on each side with higher and lower outlets on each side hidden within the rockwall so alot of 90 degrees and pushing in at different levels to add flow tothe tank. you should be fine with your setup pushing into top of tank. with what im planning i call it the jet tub effect lol

lockrookie 01-07-2012 07:52 AM

in the end to do what i wish to do if i have to spend the money so be it cause i wish it towork wellto its full potential rather than just half a... but i hope to finda decently qietpump as well

laguna pond pump by hagen.

they have various models and they are the BASE pump for the RED DRAGON and ATB pumps and coralvue copied the design for their waterblaster/bubble blaster pump.

you can pick one up at most pond/general pet stores so you can test it out in fresh water then return it if you don't like. Its a submersible pump but i think you can run it external as well. Dirt cheap too. These pumps are actually quiet

BTW the reef flo pumps are not quiet - they are quiet in terms of other external pumps I guess. I dunno if you guys are spending your time at too many heavy metal concerts but your definition of quiet is different from mine. I run eheim return pumps and used high end computer fans to mod my light and cabinet so it was silent. All i can hear is the air intake on my swc skimmer (which everyone here says is silent but it isnt) and my vortechs (gentle hum in reefcrest)

I totally agree 100%

find my Dart quiet though admittedly not totally silent and will say also they are not all the same.

First Dart was near silent but replacement I was sent under warranty wasn't. Complained to Reeflo and third was near silent again. Imagine same with Snappers, some probably better than others.

e46er 01-08-2012 12:56 AM

I have 2 snappers.... They are not noisy but they do hum - a closed cabinet and I can't hear them

lockrookie 01-08-2012 03:22 AM

you guys are making my head spin with ideas...lol not helping my decision

The Grizz 01-08-2012 03:34 AM

I have been researching as well on this issue Jeff. The snappers are fairly quite in a sound proofed cabinet but I think a submersible Laguna with a sound dampening pad under it ( in a zip lock ) would be the best way to go. Laguna pumps are very reasonably priced as well, I might just try a 4200 or a combo of 2 - 3000 GPH pumps on my 300 gal.

lockrookie 01-08-2012 04:02 AM

too many pumps... so many options... maybe some rum will calm my mind lol then play einy miny miney mo...

lockrookie 01-09-2012 07:30 AM

ok culdnt resist i had to out thi out there

this is the general idea not exact scale ,or positioning for the return lines/ tankflow.. the general idea is to pump the clean water low in tank pushing up bad water to the overflow... necessary...prolly not. but hey if it works well, why not. hopeully it will add to some of the current fireing towards the front glass through rock work. it will have a syphon break top middle.

mark 01-09-2012 01:47 PM

lots of plastic to hide

lockrookie 01-09-2012 03:39 PM

having a rockwall background i would have the plasic there anyways
