Mikes the skimmer King hands down!

So Mike - what were the pros and cons to the last few high end skimmers you had?

Do you believe price and performance go hand in hand or is some of it just more show than go? Is there a point of diminishing returns with some of these higher end models vs. something similar but cheaper?

thanks!

Vince

Hey, that dual Beckett looks similar to mine, which I inherited with my SW tank and house that we bought. What is yours called? Never been able to figure out the brand name of mine. Here is a pic. I am only running one Beckett on mine right now (other tube closed off), as my pump is not powerful enough for both. But it can skim a couple cups a day wet right now, depending on how I have it dialed.

Yeah, I had sent them a pic of mine, last year, but they said it wasn't theirs... It seems to be the closest that I have found so far. Mine is not recirculating, but does have a pretty high main chamber, about 32 inches altogether.

I only have a 100g tank running on it now, so more than enough skim power for now.

Wheres the ATB? One of the best skimmers I've heard along with BK and Deltec

lastlight 01-03-2012 05:14 PM

Where's your bubble magus?

Lampshade 01-03-2012 05:21 PM

Haha, i think it's safe to say you have a skimmer addiction. you might want to try crack, it'd probably be cheaper :S.

I have the ATI BM250 right now, how would you compare it to others you ran at that time? I feel that mines doing a decent job, just haven't had anything to compare it to. Not sure if I'd be better off trading it up.

the BM 250 I loved that skimmer tHat got me going on that skimmer addiction. the only thing that i hated about the BM as the sicci pumps i even bought 2 new ones and they gave me grieve so i sold it. I would like to get one and put 2 Bubble blaster 5000's on there and fire it up. i liked the wide neck too for a more wetter skim mate too.

what makes the ATB any gold is the pump I believe its the Askoll pump on there right. other then that the plastic is no beter then any othe skimmer or the parts. take the BM 220 cone cheap made and yet they have it with the ehiem pump, however that is what that skimmer has going for it. Is the Ehiem.

I agree with that, restart isn't even an option, it's just how many times i need to pull the impeller housing off to get it going again

Skimmerking 01-03-2012 06:34 PM

thats type of design you could easily put a couple of smaller pumps and rock that skimmer like 2 ehiems would do good too

Lampshade 01-03-2012 06:41 PM

I like the idea with the Bubble Blasters, I looked at them awhile ago, I'll probably do it in a bit once my fish budget recovers from boxing day.

I have to agree with you as its mostly the pump that makes a skimmer as well as the design. An Askoll skimmer pump would be my first choice then probably an Eheim. I have noticed the higher end skimmers are nicer constructed and made with thicker acrylic as well.

Skimmerking 01-03-2012 08:53 PM

yup and when you have parts that are
CnC Machined
Hot welded
tight fitting pieces that don't move when adjusting like the flow and water height.
super quiet pumps, RD, Ehiem, Askoll,
bigger Air lines for more LPH
dissemble of parts to clean.
Sch 80 Plumbing parts.

it all adds up I would rather pay the money in
Bubble king
Deltec
Vertex cone
for good skimmers and

the name is huge and dependable

Casey8 01-04-2012 01:02 AM

Asmodeus, you are really the master of the skimmers  Can you kindly tell me what is the best skimmer for the total volume of 100 gallons ? I have a very heavy bioload with too much fish and corals plus overfeeding too, I don't mind to go a little bit over skim for my tank, and my budget is no more than $250 for the used one. Oh, and definitely no restart issue.

Skimmerking 01-04-2012 04:07 AM

Casey you are looking in a small range however I think for you a SWC 160 come is a good skimmer small foot print super quiet and it's made like a bullet. Another skimmer that u could get is
ATI BUBBLE MASTER 200 or 250 rock solid skimmer tooO

Casey8 01-04-2012 04:17 AM

Thank you very much, I will keep an eye on those you were mentioning when people are selling them on here.

Skimmerking 01-04-2012 04:19 AM

Skimmerking 01-04-2012 04:21 AM

Casey8 01-04-2012 05:00 AM

I just googled and found the information of the Reef Octopus cone with bubble blaster 2000 ... wow ... love the look of this bad boy and its performance. This will be the one for my future skimmer.
Thanks asmodeus.
