Canopy progress photos
I'm building a canopy for my 72 bowfront. It is taking a while but things are finally coming together.
Here are some shots: http://www.canreef.com/photopost/sho....php?photo=496 and another view http://www.canreef.com/photopost/sho....php?photo=495 |
Damn, why does that keep happening?

Because you are posting the link to the page your picture is on and not the actual picture. Right click on the pic, go to properties and then copy the link in there and post that with the IMG tags.
Here they are: http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...2-med.jpg?6183 http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...1-med.jpg?3486 Christy :) "the picture posting guru" |
Ahhh thanks!

Nice job so far, Jim! I admire your ambition to tackle the curvy project - must be some woodworking skills there (reminds me of Tony's 72 top)...
|
What you don't see is the pile of scrap and mistakes!!
I ended up making a jig for the bow part and shaping the pieces with a router. http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...2-med.jpg?5174 |
Cool wood bending skills on the frame. Did you make the Santa aswell?
|
Wow, nice!
Is the wood bent or cut/routed into the curve? Man, I ought to get me a router some day. |
The curve was cut out of a 2 x 8. using a jigsaw, the jig, and a router.
Kari...My father in law made the santa and snowman. |
Hey that looks familiar...

Yah...good luck with the doors....  |
Looking good, sure a lot of work when it comes to building bowfront canpies, That is some quality workmanship.
I had them made out of acrylic not so long ago for a 72 gallon bowfront. Since my acrylic skills were not good I had a friend build it for me. I helped him mark and cut the pieces. Came out alright, unfortunately pictures are bigger than 200K cannot post them here. Venki |

The plan for the doors is pretty simple. Hopefully it works out.
I have a third curved piece that I milled identical to the top and bottom curve rails. I plan to mark the centre of the rail and cut it in half. This will then form the inside brace for the door. I'll then use milled 1 x 3 s to form the actual doors. Basically, I am copying the design of the AGA stand. The back pannels will be removable and will have exhause fans monted in them. Teh top panel I am thinking of making aluminum and vented for heat disipation. The other idea I had was to build a dual plastic screen top so hot air could easily escape but the light would be diffused through two layers of screen. Obviously I've still got some work to do! |
Here is the frame wired and the lights in place (except for the T5 bulb at the back)
http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...m-med.jpg?8455 Trying to resolve bulb issues right now. Glad I tested it before hoisting it into place! |
Looking sharp!

Here is another shot. I can use the lag bolts to raise and lower the pendants to get the coverage that works best. The pendant supports are hinged so that I can pull them out to replace the bulbs when the canopy is in place.
Still working on the doors. http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...sm-med.jpg?585 |
