Bored and thinking how..
How does everyone justify expensive items for their tanks.
|
It's called "Forgiveness"
Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission :) |
Hummm, I guess depending on what it is you could say " Geez I have a billion dollars worth of corals in there and if I don't buy it they all could go for sh$t " .... Then again once a person gets in too deep what does it matter...lol . Like my light situation, I have gotten along to this point without a fancy dancy light but I know things would be better with an upgrade and have lost some corals due to lack of light,,,,,It is a tough question to answer for sure.....

But I agree with you Brett, I can find a dozen reasons for needing a bigger or even another tank. |
I think he meant he has a light... but he could have a better light =)
I'm currently trying to justify a bunch of t5s to supplement my halides it never ends  |
I'm sure there are as many different justifications as there are fish-keepers.
If you're going to do it, do it right. I've already spent $XX, what's a little more. My fish really need the extra space. My spouse is away for the weekend, they won't notice. My corals really need better light. I'd probably just spend the cash on drugs/alcohol/sex or all three, not necessarily in that order. Etc, etc.... The list goes on and on....:twised: |
Why justify it? It's my money and I'll spend it on what I want. :D
|
I made a fish savings account. I save a bit from each pay cheque and use it for everything fish related. Seems to make me feel better about buying big things, because I know I can't do it often :P
|
My fish savings account and my regular savings account are the same one
|
I normally think... what could the kids or wife have had if I hadn't spent another chunk on fish. I have to balance the guilt with the 'fun'.
how fun can be used to describe pruning valonia from the tank every night on a step-stool is beyond me  |
I personally stopped taking the wife with me to LFS because she can be worse then me, she will she something that she really likes and I have to get it.
I also have a saving account for my tanks, its in my back pocket and the wife doesn't get her hands on it  most of the upgrades I have done and are currently doing are saved for by building stands and setting up full tanks for people that have no clue how to build one. Then I have to teach then how to care for it properly to the best of my ability. |

Due to my job not allowing me to smoke those "skinny cigarettes":hippie: anymore. Gotta spend my money somehow.

Exactly. My wife enjoys the tanks too, and I'm sure she'd like to see me come home with some corals rather than two hookers and a harley! |

simply because........It makes me happy:becky:.....

Well I don't Drink or Smoke so there is money for an expensive hobby.
OK maybe I drink now and then, but its usually well I am sitting in front of my tanks. Tom R |
Smoking the skinny cigarettes as madreefer put it, is what got me into tanks, then I quit about 4 years ago, and actually had some money for the hobby lol

I can see it now: *Doug comes home with a stand-alone profilux doser* Laurie: "Honey! Lets just get the rest of the profilux system!?" |

Lmao... not only did you both reply at the same time exactly... but also said the same thing!
I was trying to choose something 'high profile' that had an even higher cost accompaniment or related product, haha. |

I also have a "fish-account" and a little bit from every paycheck goes in there. Then when I want/need something there is no guilt attached.
I am also lucky enough to have a very supportive hubby. Honestly can't remember him ever saying no....and he can (more importantly WILL)build anything.... from even my crappy sketches on a napkin/scrap of paper. You can pretty much colour me spoiled when it comes to the tanks. But it goes both ways, he has his own rather expensive hobbies and we feed those as well. |
I spend a lot on my addictions (mostly corals and fish), but I used to supplement with frag sales. Then my Felicia was born and all the money from fish-related sales went into her university fund. Then came Isabella and now I have to figure out a way to fund her schooling fund as well. In the meantime, I just work crazy hours and buy when I see something I really want for my tanks at a good price. Irene knows I only buy when its a good (if not great) deal so she's fine with what I spend on the tanks.
It also helped that I recently sold my largest, most expensive tank. I know I will probably overspend on Boxing Day sales but then again, I don't buy LED tvs at Best Buy or do any other BD shopping so I probably spend less than most other guys I know who do their electronics shopping that day. I also took a year's sabbatical from spending on my tanks after the 220g blew and so the way I see it, I have a year's worth of spending to catch up on:wink::biggrin: Anthony |
There is simply one way I can justify expensive things:
I have to sell something fish related for equal or greater value of what I want to buy. Usually for expensive things this involves buying a cheap tank and stand, reconditioning it to make it look nice, then selling it for profit. So far my 180 gallon tank has not cost me a dollar of my regular earned wages |
