anyone ever have problems with chitons???
 

well it seems im a bit overstocked with them i probably have around 50 alot of adults and alot of babies it seems they are breeding and ive never had numbers like this before, if i was to look at my tank come 2 am i can easily count around 40-50.its the amount of babies i have that has me wondering if they ever get to plaque proportions ?? i know they eat algae so im not worried about that more just curious if anyone else has as many as i do lol

anyone else have this many??

Wow. You're lucky to have a free clean up crew. No, we've never had such luck in the chiton department as you.

I've never seen one in my tanks...

they are def neat but theres just so many of them, at first it was just around a dozen or less and now im around 40-50 with alot of babies popping up more and more. finding any in the day time is next to impossible as they are nocturnal so thats the only reason they are staying..... at night they are a bit of an eye sore as my glass and rocks are covered by them.....id offer some up but i just dont have the patience to try to lure some onto pieces of glass or rocks lol

this is the first tank ive ever seen like this, ive had one in a tank before but nothing like this:)

they are def good att the camoflauge game lol you can be staring at a rock and not even notice your looking at one, and their color changes slightly to match their back ground:)

Had one for years in my 72 Gal bow...no problem, just looks like a fossil. :biggrin:

wait, they move? I had one in my 90 and it never moved once in like 9 months. I thought they were like oysters that way.

hahah yeah they move their not the fastest little fellas but they can get around, maybe it depends on the type of chiton....slower than snails....if thats possible lol:)

well if ya wanna be technical clams, oysters etc. can move:wink:

very true even the bi valves i have in my tank move around, and we all know about jumping clams hehehe;)

I've had the little ones in my tank for years with no issues. I probably have around 50 or so at any given time. They seem to keep themselves in check.

I have some in my tank also, they came as hitchhikers and I have a bunch now. Only problem I have with them is they eat the coraline off the back of my tank. I'm trying to cover the back so it's counter productive. Better to have a nice diversity though.

How old is your tank? Perhaps a stage in your tanks age?

I had a friend that had a problem with chitons......doctor gave him a prescription for it and it cleared up in a week:mrgreen:

I have ton's of beautiful purple along with grey chiton's, it's just amzing to pick up a rock and to think that this was around for 1000's-1 000 000's of year's.

A "friend" had that problem eh Doug... :eyebrows:

I have about a dozen in the 90g; haven't seen any in the 225g though, which doesn't surprise me with a Tuskfish, Lunare Wrasse and Hawkfish.

They are algae grazers and don't hurt anything. Good luck trying to pry one off a rock though. I've had one in ,y tank for about 3 yrs now. First time I saw him, tried to pry him off the rock with a butter knife, but his suction power was so intense, broke a piece off his shell before he would let go. They're just like a large wood louse. Curls up in a ball for defense.
