Treating a wounded 12" blue ring angel

today i stopped by the local pet store and they recieved a ~12" blue ring angel that had been badly beaten up from shipping, it has some pretty bad wounds to its side just infront of its tail and is missing about 1/3 of its right fin. The owner of the store offered the fish to me for free because ive had pretty good luck with treating all the injured fish he gets in although ive never treated this large of a fish with this large of injuries so any advice would help.

For those who were wondering how it got injured, it was shipped in a leaky box and lost about half its water in shippment. It ended up doing quite a bit of damage to itself by thrashing around. The store ordered small angels and recieved this gigantic angel.

it will be going in a 150g tank for treatment and once it is healed up will be moved to my 360gallon tank

I would do a methylene blue dip before adding the fish to the 150 gallon tank, then watch for signs of disease. Don't forget to have some ammonia detoxifer on hand and a compatible way to measure ammonia like an Ammonia Alert.

How much mb/g would you use for a dip?

You can go by the directions on the bottle, but it doesn't matter much. Just make the water mild-medium blue.

Is that glare on his side or injury? Looks like glare. He looks like he's not in that bad condition. Where is most of the damage? Nice big one!

That's the uninjured side, he has wounds from front to back on the other side

Myka 11-28-2011 04:11 PM

Oh, ya I see! Did you MB dip him? MB will help ward off infection.

Yuppers, used up the last of my methyl blue

Raven34 12-02-2011 10:08 PM

How's he doing? He should be showing signs of pulling through by now. Must be stunning in person.

He's actually doing quite well

Beautiful fish, goodluck. I hope it recovers nicely.

spit.fire 12-09-2011 11:44 PM

Update, he is healing up quite nicely, I'd say about 60% healed at this point although he is not eating much still but is still at a heathy size

Taaron 12-10-2011 01:28 AM

Thats good to hear, you and the fish are lucky, thats my favourite type of angel.

spit.fire 12-15-2011 12:49 PM

Everything was going fine until a breaker blew yesterday while I was at work and the angels condition deteriorated and she did not make it through the night

Raven34 12-16-2011 03:00 AM

Thats bad luck! I was pulling for him.
