Would anyone be interested in a water treatment "course" for reef hobbyists?
Hey guys,
I teach a waste water treatment and pollution control course at Chemical Engineering UBC, which covers everything you'd ever need to know should you want to build a water treatment plant. The neat thing is, everything we do in this hobby such as carbon dosing (ie. biological substrate reduction), skimmers (ie. dissolved oxygen floatation), pH control and so on, are all part of the curriculum (albeit at a different scale). I was wondering, would anyone be interested in me re-working my course material to have a focus on reef keeping and go through the technical aspects of the various methods and equipment we use to keep our systems clean? This would be of interest to DIY guys or people looking to optimize their designs. It would realistically take me a couple months to put the material together but I'm willing to do it if there are enough people interested in me doing so. Let me know if you are interested in this or if there was something in particular you'd want to learn about, or just vote 'no'. Oh, and for the record, this would be free (the course is normally $550) Cheers! |
yes, I would be interested...
|
Definitely, if in the evening, and centrally located.
|
So are you building a secondary treatment pond in your backyard?
|
Yup, I'd be interested for sure
|
I should also add I'll do this online for all the people not local.
And Anthony, if it keeps raining like this my yard is going to turn into a pond for sure. |
I would be interested in something like that, online of course. I guess it would depend on the delivery method for online.
|
That sounds like some thing that I definitely would be interested in.
Thanks. Will tag on for further info. Lenny. |
I would also be interested in the online version. Thanks.

I spent countless hours in the treatment plant in Kelowna, you could taste the waste days after leaving! blech!! |
But yes, a course would be great for people to get an idea of how it's done. All very similar to our tanks!

Great idea ScubaSteve. Once its been decided, I will see if I can work my schedule around to make it to the workshop. |
i would be interested as well
|
You had me at free. Seriously though, it would be a great idea.
|
Are there any particular topics you guys are curious in learning?
|
+1 for online :)
|
Sounds like a great idea.

Most likely on line, due to a day time restrictions. Thank you for doing this, (or thinking about doing) voted yes. |
I would be more than interested. It helps when you know what you're doing. So, I really want to learn.
|
That is an excellent idea. I would be in for sure!!!
Very generous of you to take the time to prepare material and offer this course for free. |
I'm glad to see many of you are interested. Ok, I'll do it. It'll take me a while to put it all together, so I'll need some time.
I'm going to try and put it together so that I cover as many aspects of water treatment in the aquaria sense. Can anyone suggest some topics you like to see? I'll cover skimmers, bioreactors (and carbon dosing) and flocculation (ie. why your tank looks like a dust storm and how you can fix it). Anything else you want to see? |
Sounds good Scuba Steve. Let me see if I can make this part of my professional development time.
|
I like the online info due to not local to Vancouver!!
|
i am in. great idea.
|
course
yes, I would be very much interested in that course!!
|
i would be in for this too buddy:)
|
Even if you just make it available in PDF it would be great too
thank you |

Sure........ sounds interesting.

I'm in
Now this sounds interesting --- I know there are a few other techies on this site, but if you want some help with getting things online in a course format, I can help.
I'm a "Distance Learning Programmer" meaning I work in IT for a distance learning school and spend most of my time getting course materials online is a nice way. I highly recommend Moodle for a course, it's easy and quick to get content into it with pics, video, etc. I "might" even be able to help out with hosting if needed  And just to be sure -- I'm not offering my services for pay, just for the fun of it (free) and to see a course like this developed. |
