10g bowfront tank/34g cube

Awhile ago I saw Blue world had a cute little orange/red frogfish that I thought was adorable but I know they need a tank all to themselves and they're not cheep so I resisted the urge to buy it. However after seeing the pictures SeaHorse_Fanatic posted of his I knew I had to get one of my own.

So during the tank tours I saw Neal wasn't using his 34g cube tank and I thought it would make a good froggy tank and thankfully he sold it to me for an excellent price  However Doug mentioned it would be nice to have the 34g for all his little gobies in his 30g tank so he wouldn't have to move his 30g and 110g all at the same time, which made sense.

However I really wanted this little froggy guy and he had been at the LFS for quite awhile and was eating silversides and krill really well. So I looked around my house, I had an old 10g bowfront tank, an old computer stand (that I bought but never used from Jysk), an extra heater, nano powerhead and nano remro skimmer from my old 20g tank and I had bought some more LR recently and have lots in my display.....so.....I got ambitious and set it all up a few weeks ago and thought I should finally post pictures. He was more of a pale pink then red/orange when I first got him, but still, he's awsome.

You already know I love this setup, but I'll say it again, I love this setup! I so want to do something like this myself some day.

What do you do for topup on this tank, just bucket brigade it for now?

How often do you need to feed him? Everyday or does he fill up and then take a break?

fishoholic 11-22-2011 07:46 PM

It's only a 10g so it doesn't evaporate much, I have a Tupperware container that I use to scoop up RO water with (from my rubbermaid top off container on my big system) and I top it off every day. So far he usually eats one krill every other day. He also eats silversides but prefers krill.

SeaHorse_Fanatic 11-22-2011 08:47 PM

OK, so I'll take the blame for this one too:wink:

Used to it.

hehehe.

Looking good. Hopefully with the red macro to camouflage against, it'll recolour back up. Mine has kept its colour well in its little 8g Fluval Floral tank.

As you should

I've actually wanted a red frogfish for awhile, seeing the pictures of yours and knowing there was one just like it at Blue world motivated me to put a tank together and get it.

So far the red marco seems to be helping, he loves hanging out in it and his colour has gotten darker since I added it.

BlueWorldAquatic 11-23-2011 10:02 PM

He looks great Laurie.

Now throw some mollies in there and make him hunt.

Tony I hope you liked the video, it's not the best quality but I know you like seeing frogfish swim.

:surprise: What make him work for his food? Not sure I could do that, I wouldn't want him to stop eating frozen and I'd feel bad for the mollies.

I got a new light for my 80g so I took down one of my Glo lights and put it over the 10g frogfish tank. Much better then the cheep florescent yellow blub lamp.

With my birthday coming up Doug brought up my birthday present, a stand for my 34g cube. He also brought up the goodies I bought from Dave for this tank. So this weekend Doug and I got a lot of work done on the 34g cube. I mostly got the stand built by myself (he helped a bit at the end) but he did all the plumbing and he did the overflow box in the tank and he drilled another hole in the tank for the herbie overflow system to work.

The goodies in their boxes

The stand

Forgot to take a pic of Doug drilling the hole, but here's a pic of it finished. I circled the hole he drilled in red.

 No kidding, but the tank I got used from my friend Neal for a sweet deal, Doug bought the stand as my B-day gift and my B-day money that I'm getting from my family will pay for the skimmer/pump/plumbing etc.

This is rad nice looking build. But now I'm wondering if I can have one in my frag tank what a cute bastard! He looks like he's just sorta floating on the macro in those pics lol.

So jealous of that pipe cutter! I hate using the hacksaw and then tracking those plastic bits all over the room (and house if you don't brush socks off etc). I can't believe that thing can simply slice thru it?!

Delphinus 11-28-2011 06:44 PM

 I stopped using my hand pipe cutters after getting addicted to using the chopsaw for pipes. Cleanest cuts EVAH! ..... Not so clean on the floor however. The explosion of PVC sawdust however does make for some amusing moments when your spouse discovers WTH you're doing with the chopsaw. On an unrelated note my hobbies are still permanently banished to the basement.

I don't see why you couldn't put one in a frag tank, they are really cool to watch. He was sort of floating on the macro, he grabs onto it with his hands and moves around on it. Very cool to watch, only one time the macro started floating into to power head so I started to move it over (not realizing he was holding onto it at the time) and needless to say he went for a ride  didn't realize what a grip they can have.

The pipe cutter is the best thing ever! Slices clean though fairly easily with the push of a button, is battery powered and leaves no mess behind. We were going to use a hacksaw but thankfully we got some plumbing parts from steve at red coral and he let us borrow it

Oilers 11-28-2011 10:12 PM

What's your plan for this tank Laurie? It's looking great so far. I am looking to get a small tank to house some corals but haven't had the time to do so yet.
I think I should give my wife more hints on birthday present(s). She is not as cool as Doug is

Haha I can just imagine what a chopsaw would do to pipe! And unlike sawdust you'd have a lot of static charge on that dust too I think?

Eventually it will become an upgrade tank for my frogfish. For now I'm getting it ready to house Doug's little gobies and inverts etc. so he can move the contents of his 30g tank into it (might sneak a pipefish in there too) This way he can take his time and he wont have to move his 30g and 110g all at once.

ya that pipe shear was the shizzzz.....no mess, no walking to the chop saw.....cordless......made plumbing the tank wayyyyy less time consuming.....I would have had the thing plumbed in record time if I didnt forget to plumb in the gate valve for the herbie and have to run to the Rona for another fitting to fix my boo boo:redface:

Delphinus 11-29-2011 01:56 AM

Ah well, just as well, you can't do a plumbing project without at least one back to the store to get another fitting. I think it might cause the world to end or something. If you ever complete a plumbing project on the first pass and suddenly see flying horsemen ... quickly cut the pipe and claim it's the wrong size and go back to the store for the sake of us ALL.

it is the first rule of plumbing a tank.....and I quote.... rule #1 states that there WILL be more than one trip to the local home improvement store:lol:

You should try feeding the frogfish FD shrimp. Mine gets more red when I feed it that and it pales out to pink when I feed it market prawn pieces.

Geez if it was only 2 trips total my wife wouldn't mind tagging along. The family likes to come to 'the wood store' as the kids call it with me but if it's plumbing she refuses to come along anymore!

It's time-consuming and I usually return 2 or 3 times:

- staring blankly at the parts on the shelf
- sifting through mixed up bins
- creating new ways to get from A to B when they are missing that key piece
- consulting your drawing you brought
- hunting down a sales guy to cut some hose if needed
- laying parts out on the floor like a weirdo
- staring blankly (again) at the parts on the shelf

Blom 12-01-2011 11:14 PM

Did you see me at home depot Brent? That is my exact routine. Ive usually changed my mind by the time I get to the car so I have to go back in...

Does FD mean freeze dried? Where do you find that and what brand?

I feed mine Superba Krill by H20 life.

I didnt realize that people were cutting pipes with a saw.

http://images1.mcmaster.com/Contents...ng?ver=6102172

I picked one of these up ages ago, and they work great! Not as slick as a powered version, but it was only $10.

I think it was from Princess Auto, but Totem and I imagine Home Depot, Rona, etc would all have them.

Delphinus 12-02-2011 01:55 AM

If you had a few dozen cuts of 1.5" and 2" pipe though, you'd switch to a chopsaw too. :p

But I agree the hand cutters trump a hacksaw.
