Red Sea Max 130D - LED Retrofit

I've been working on an RSM 130 kit for a while now and here it is. Heatsinks I had ordered custom size just for the RSM hood and the drivers tie into the existing timer and moonlights already in this neat little hood.

Full install instructions are located here

LED choices in this one are (individual LEDs):
14x Cool White
8x Royal Blue
8x Blue

Here is a few photos of what this kit looks like:

LEDs glued down:

Wired up with provided connectors:

This is how it looks when fitted in

And here is what you get for LEDs in the standard kit (you can always choose different colors if you like):

Where did you buy the parts from and how much was the setup for these litems.... Do you think you will still need stunners like the ecoxotica ones ... I myself have been thinking about such a retrofit. Are you able to put sps corals as well?
Thanx

If you look at Martin sig you will realize HE IS Modular LED. If you want a retro fit send Martin an e-mail, it's the best way to contact him.

Grizz beat me too it but here is the link: http://www.modularled.ca/red-sea-max-130/

Total price is $275 and no you do not need stunner strips this is designed for SPS growth , in fact you will most-likely dim it down a little.

do fans fit? Curious why that wasn't mentioned unless I missed something?

The RSM hood already has 2 fans that will draw air in and over the heatsinks existing out the opposite side.

Looks pretty good...very tempting

- how does it compare to a Ecotech radion which i know fits into the red sea max 130s cabinet
- any images of the tank compared to stock pc lighting/before and after retrofit
- how many hours to assemble this retrofit for us laymans
- would be nice to have a video for the instructions too
- no need for lens on these leds.?

- do you sell ecoxotic panaroma pro or some similar.... I heard shadows of ones aquascape may be compensated only by 2 additions of stunner strips at the front and back
- any group discount for us folks out here in vancouver

Comparing to a Radion:
  • Radion has 2 extra LEDs over this kit (counting whites and blues)
  • Radion has Red and Green LEDs (you can add those to this kit if you like)
  • Radion is three times the price.
  • You are going to need some more serious modifications to the hood for a Radion. The fan on the Radion blows downward, so you will need to cut the acrylic I think. I never thought of trying to put a Radion in there. I think it would be a little overkill however we have more Radions coming this week so I will experiment.

Pictures:
I don't have one of these tanks running but as soon as I get some from a customer I will show you. I have 2 kits going out Monday so hope to have some soon.

Hours:
It's really not difficult. Approximately 2 hours maybe. There will be some glue cure time but you can watch TV or surf canreef during that time so I didnt include it

Video:
Unfortunately it just doesn't lend very well to a video this one. Its very straight forward though. Open hood, remove stuff you don't need anymore, replace with new stuff haha. If you follow my full instructions link up there it wont be a problem.

Lenses:
I personally don't think you need lenses on this one because of the tank size and depth, however I know everyone has their own opinion on that so you are free to add lenses if you wish. Other customers have told me they preferred the BioCubes without lenses so I stopped including them in the kits.

Ecoxotic Panaroma
I only learned of these today. Inquiring as to distribution right now. We are trying to get all the LED options available listed so will definitely look into getting these stocked.

Group Discounts:
Absolutely, we do group discounts on all our products.

Is there room left in the hood for the dimming kit, or does it need to be placed outside of it?

msjboy 11-21-2011 06:09 PM

FYIO : Radion shoehorned into RSM 130

http://www.bcaquaria.com/forum/marin...45/#post176484

The above link to a fella who put in a new radion led lite under the hood of the RSM 130.... he tried a few other lites with unsatisfactory results but says this is ok for illuminating the entire tank except if you have too much over hangs in the aquascape, there's still some shadowsn.

Considering the $800 price, lite is about the same price as a new tank itself.

Would be interesting to see how modularled's setup compares though. I think 2 stunner strips probably will be necessary.

Dimming kit goes inside. Take a look at the full instructions link. About half way down you will see where I installed the dimmers.

Why would a strip of 1W LEDs be necessary?

You certainly do not need any additional lumens but I think its more for eliminating shadows if you have tall rock work.

Cool, that sure makes things nice and easy! Nice write up!

stevenk 11-23-2011 05:24 PM

I have one of these retrofit LED kits on they way from Modular LED, should be here today. I will put some before and after pics up.

lee9 12-11-2011 02:43 AM

Are you planning on doing a RSM 250 kit also?

martinmcnally 12-11-2011 11:43 PM

Yes I am going to make a 250 kit as soon as th holidays are over.

wehtam 01-25-2012 03:20 AM

Awesome. Definately interested in this kit when my lights are up for renewal...( in a few months) lol. I'll keep this in mind. As for the stunner strips, I don't see why you need them cause you don't have them with the PC. Unless its for like you said to eliminate shadows with tall rock work.

Looking forward to pics of a running tank!!!

Here's a picture and a couple of videos of Martin's kit on my 130D. At the time of these images the tank was in early DUSK mode (blues only) so everything looks a bit more blue/deep than it does during other times of the day.

Here's a link to my tank after I added this LED kit to it, the tank is a bit messy as I changed the rock work around the night I took this short video. I will post a better one once everything is cleaned up and the corals are mounted on the rocks. The lights are at about 80% max. Looks better in real life.
