I'll check my books in a bit but I think it's oxypora sp.

"awesome" would be my uneducated guess.

Errr.... are you looking for the common name or the scientific name? Like I said, it's like 99% likely to be an Oxypora sp.. Can't really give you more detail than that without seeing the skeleton... but I'm guessing you don't want to show me that:razz:

reefermadness 11-22-2011 12:07 AM

Do you own it?

BMahura 11-22-2011 12:32 AM

All the pictures i have seen of oxypora sp. dont look likemine so im not sure if that's what it is. Was kinda looking for the common name, was told it was a rainbow chalice that wasnt doing well and bought it as a 5 dollar dying frag and it has now tripped in size and im amazed by the colors.

And yes it is mine:mrgreen:

I'm having a hard time deciding if it is Oxypora or Echinophyllia...it is rather "meaty" to be an Oxy, but the shape is more Oxy. Hmmm...I'm leaning towards Echinophyllia.

Looks like a Masterpiece Chalice to me. I have one too, love it.

This is the closest i have seen to mine based on a couple google pictures. Im leaning towards this

I was having the same debate. They're really hard to tell apart without seeing the skeleton. The large septa at the growth edge had me leaning toward oxypora but it is rather meaty looking. You've got me second guessing myself.

i have 6 chalices now and i feel that it is one of the less meaty of them it the same "meatiness" as my Indian warpaint chalice if that helps at all

No, I don't follow Chalices' common names much, and a Google search doesn't come up with anything for "Indian Warpaint Chalice coral". Whatever genus it is, it is very happy.

$400 in the states ..ya I believe that. Either way ....you are VERY VERY lucky with that piece that is for sure. That is one special chalice.

Oxy or echino..its still a chalice.

BMahura 11-22-2011 05:08 PM

Sorry myka I meant just a warpaint chalice. I looked but I'm not sure of the genus name. It's the dark red with bright blue.

I can't believe how much a chalice like this goes for
