Sorry, don't know why picture looks sideway when upload.

They do that frequently, most soft corals go through phases of open/closed polyps. My toadstools always close up and kinda droop at night, occasionally it'll last for a few days.
|
I had a toadstool that retracted its polyps like that for a month and after the month i observed tonns of growth and its as healthy as ever now. Its done this a couple times sometimes for a few days and that one time for a month
|
yeah it happens one of my zoa frags was closed for almost 2 weeks and now its opening again

Funny, today a large toadstool that ive never seen polyps on, was extended and in full display. Its the 1st time in months i seen this, i was sure it was going to die. Ive had other leathers die in the past, when they do they sag and droop, then dissolve, usually it looks viable till you touch it then it melts in your hands. They are hardy corals not always in display mode.
If yours is starting to collapse and compress or lay down, try adding some supplements to your tank, leathers drool over iodide, and vitamin C. You could also try moving him to a new area, perhaps he is upset with the flow or lighting and is now just showing signs. Leathers are not always fast to show displeasure but when they do its either supplements, lighting, flow or too high nutrient load in your tank. |
Most leather type coral actually go though a molting phase where they will appear to be gray & slimmy. They will produce a mucus film on them & if not moved in to more direct flow for a temp period they can stay like this for some time, it's a normal phase they go through as they grow. If you can't or don't want to move it put a small power head directed at it until you notice that it is returning to normal.

Mine also does this, comes back in a couple days looking even better

I had my leather for over 3 years until I added bio pellets. Killed it in 2 months.

When I cut my big one down to frag, the base part that I left in the tank did that too, for a couple weeks, IIRC. It shed some layers of white mulm during that time, but then eventually the polyps started to come back out and it started growing again.
|
You really can't see the slime coat but it's there. Its how leathers protect them selfs while the molt. If it is more gray then brown it is definitely molting.
