If I had to do it all over again, I'd rent an excavator. I think I'm still feeling the effects of hand digging this thing 2 years later.

Wow!! Very nicely done  Perfect job for the area you chose and to dig it by hand! How long have you been working at this? Nice selection of rocks as well, by their colors, sizes and shapes. Did you find (hand pick) the big rocks?

Broke ground in July 2009 and it's been an ongoing project. Everything was done by hand. There's no shortage of rocks in this country so I decided to use mostly fieldstone. I'm lucky enough in my line of work to be able to pick any good looking rocks from the roadsides in my area. I also have a couple of co-workers with massive rockpiles on their land. I can't imagine what I would have paid if I had to buy all of them. Rocks at landscape stores aren't cheap. Alot of the aquatic plants were hand gathered as well. Cattails, reed grasses and others from sloughs and ditches helped to cut down the costs.

Awesome! Ya I know what it's like to dig giant holes in the ground.. I hate clay. HATE.

So how deep is yours?

I was going for 4 feet in the deepest part but I hit sand at 40". It's about 38-39" with the underlay and liner in which is more than enough.

Nice. Mine is 24" (mainly for the sake of my young kids), but I'm thinking of renovating mine next year to add another foot.

I have a locking chain link fence to keep mine out.

Wow, that's nice and deep. Thanks for sharing.

That's a lot of manual digging I respect that having done 2 years of irrigation work! Very nice pond and nice bonus with the free hitchhikers.

Fabulous work. I'm thinking of maybe building a bigger greenhouse in my backyard and sink in a koi pond inside it to help with humidity, heat moderating in the winter, and use of dirty fish water on my citrus trees in there.

Nothing as big as yours though.

Now I know who to call to hook me up on some rock for the wife pond area she want to start next year. Nice work, love the slope.
