You most Ghetto equipment

So, what's everyone's most ghetto equipment? Mine has got to be my stand. I use garbage bags as doors!

*Whew* Now that that is off my chest, who's next?

Stretch 02-02-2004 03:43 AM

My kalk dripper is a tropicana orange juice bottle

butters88 02-02-2004 04:36 AM

Canadian Man 02-02-2004 04:50 AM

I'm using the plastic stuff that comes on 2x4 foot fluorescent fixtures to block light from my hood that's on pulley's. Not really as getto as the garbage bags though

mr_alberta 02-02-2004 05:02 AM

kuatto 02-02-2004 03:51 PM

Bev's DIY lego lightstand story is becoming almost as famous as her

DH has two huge Rubbermaid bins of Lego  He doesn't use it for anything. It just sits in the tubs. You'd be amazed at the many everyday uses Lego has. DH doesn't mind, either. He's a pretty good guy  He even thinks I'm the more "normal" of the two of us, if you can believe that

Namscam 02-02-2004 04:18 PM

LEGO???

dOORS

i used towels for doors on my stand and canapy for 6 years or so I finaly made real doors this fall.

sleeman 02-02-2004 08:23 PM

Im using tinfoil for the reflector in refugium. Has to be replaced about every three weeks because the salt eats it. At least I am using new tinfoil.

Cheers,

Al

EmilyB 02-02-2004 10:13 PM

 Yes, the duct tape certainly adds

MitchM 02-03-2004 06:57 PM

Great topic!

Mitch

mr_alberta 02-03-2004 07:15 PM

I think the duct tape adds a certain classiness to it

Tin foil

I use tinfoil as well for the reflecter on my canopy door.

My padding on my cleaning magnet came off so I have it inside the silk case that Okleys sunglasses come in so it doesn't scrach the out side of the tank.

Buccaneer 02-04-2004 05:33 AM

A margerine container ( upside down ) in my sump as a stand for my Mag 18 skimmer pump

EmilyB 02-04-2004 06:37 AM

Oh, that just reminded me, I have a rubbermaid stool in my 108g as a skimmer stand.

hw 02-04-2004 05:54 PM

stand made from 2 speakers stacked together and repainted.

Padding started to come off of my magnet too. Use an old dish cloth wrapped around the outside magnet. Doesn't scratch my glass either.

Also use Lego INSIDE my tanks. Have Hagen 802s and have put Lego between the 802 holders and the back glass so the PHs are perpendicular to the water's surface. Gotta love that Lego

Why ghetto equipment?

Why not just post pics of your ghetto reefs? Mine has some ghetto features and is pretty much a ghetto reef!

Mogo 02-05-2004 09:25 PM

1) My surge tank. Toilet hardware and a fancy 2 dollar bucket.

2) My moon light system. A string of christmas tree lights across the top of the tank with only one blue bulb in it. I scratched off some of the blue film on the bulb to give a nice blue-white moonlight effect.

Heeeeey...that's a pretty good idea!

Mogo 02-05-2004 09:34 PM

Lego-
I used lego as bio balls in my diy trickle filter (fw). The kids were p.o.'d

BCOrchidGuy 02-05-2004 10:57 PM

As far as magnets go I used a green scrub pad (non detergent type) and hot glued it to my old magnet then trimmed it down to fit, works AWESOME and when it's to far gone, I just do it again. It works on coraline algae and others ususally with little effort.

Uber-getto

Glued pot scrubber to wooden spoon for algae scraper . . . saw a guy using pot scrubbers as bio-balls - groovy!

Joe Reefer 04-25-2005 04:54 PM

I used lego to raise the skimmer out of the water more.

Cap'n 04-25-2005 06:19 PM

I have a light bar made out of a piece of eavestrough. I wired a couple sockets into it that hold Home Depot power compacts. Painted the whole thing flat black. People seldom notice until I point it out.

kuatto 04-25-2005 06:44 PM

My mh ballast is sitting in a Folgers coffee can under the stand

marie 04-25-2005 07:00 PM

Just about everything is ghetto, but here's a pic of my kalk drip in the top left corner and what you can't see is my salt bucket seat

Invigor 04-25-2005 07:04 PM

I use cindercrete blocks for my stand and a 2L pop bottle for my skimmer's collection cup. Used to use tinfoil for reflectors, but my VHOs melted the adhesive holding it on, so I ended up painting the inside of my canopy white.

G1GY 04-25-2005 07:06 PM

My welfare 33 gallon tank stand! (Just laying in the corner of the garage now.)

http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...tank_stand.jpg

It's an old floor model TV that I gutted all the electronics out of and chopped the legs off of. Then I just added a shelf and painted it with that speckle stone paint.

When it's all set up and clean, you can't even tell it's a 1970's TV.

Pretty lame......I know.

mr_alberta 04-25-2005 07:07 PM

That's not Ghetto, that's DIY genious!
