Yup ... they sure are  ... The challenge with this tank has always been the length ( 8 feet ) and finding the right amount of flow ... I have them running on 2 X Mag18's ( 2 nozzles per Mag18 ) but would like to upgrade to Mak5's or Iwasaki equivalent some time down the road ... I know that the Mag is not pressure rated but tell that to my corals/anemones/fish

Looks good Steve.

Must seem like forever to fill that huge tank up with corals.

backround

What is the background made of ? Are they coralline or some background rocks ?

sumpfinfishe 01-30-2004 08:20 AM

Look'n great Steve

Couldn't you just throw in a Stream to get a little more flow

Doug 01-30-2004 01:34 PM

Nice. Looks like a decent coralline growth. A friend uses the educators on his Mag 12.

I made arogrocrete and poured it over eggcrate to make panels and then siliconed the panels to the backs and sides ... they are covered in coraline and bugs now so help with nitrate reduction ... there is 450lbs of live rock plus " the wall "

I suppose the streams could have worked but I figure that I am at least doubling the output of a Mag 18 which only costs $ 200 CDN and 2 eductors at about $ 40 for the pair ... so for $ 240 CDN I am getting about 3600 GPH ... If I change the pumps to even a Mak 4 @ 1190 GPH ( but is pressure rated and about the same price as a Mag 18 ) I could potentially boost the output of the 2 eductors up to 4800 GPH per side so with both pumps and 4 eductors I could get up to 9600GPH from my current 7200GPH ... and a Mak 5 would plaster the fish to the sides of the tank ! ...

hmmm. I want a tank that size!!! :)

BCOrchidGuy 01-30-2004 04:49 PM

Steve, bloody brilliant tank. I'm having a new tank delivered and I have been considering putting in a couple of Mag9s. Do you have them under your rock? If so, how to you keep them clean or remove them? I assume you have a cover over the intake?

I love the aragocrete back wall, that's awesome. wow.. simply.. wow

Doug
PS where did you get those nozzle things?

Delphinus 01-30-2004 04:59 PM

Sweet rose Steve

Looks great! It must be a challenge to fill a tank that big. What type of lighting are you using to light that beast?

Thanks Doug ... I am using 2 closed loops ... on each side behind the rockwork and about 8" above the sand is a 1 1/2" screened intake ( about 1' 6" from the ends ) ... this comes out the back of the tank and up to the Mag 18 and then outputs on the opposite side of the tank through the eductors ... I have valves on everything so I can take the punps out to clean them and I made the intakes larger so that I can upgrade the size of the pumps down the road.

I will find the link to the eductors for you ... I think you need a pump with a bit more gusto to run them though

EDIT : here is the link ... http://www.kthsales.com/website/vend...g_eductors.htm

What do Eductors do exactly?

Hey Mason ... Thanks ! ... I am using 4 X 400W MH 10K bulbs and 4 X 96W VHO Actinic ... the actinics are not running at the moment as it is a new hood that I got built from a local hydroponic store ... the end caps are installed but just have not had the time to complete the wiring ... I will have them running again in the next few weeks. The VHO are run by 2 X WH7 ballasts.

Cheers

They draw in water from the sides and depending on the pump ( pressure rated is best ) they can anywhere from double to as much as quadruple your pump output

http://www.kthsales.com/website/vend...tors/Bex-3.jpg

Because of the size of the tank I needed good circulation but did not want large powerheads or multiple powerheads ... I am building a arogrocrete " cover " for the eductors so that they will blend into the back wall and hopefully I wont see them at all

BCOrchidGuy 01-30-2004 09:24 PM

Chad check out the link Steve gave me, it explains it all... (wow)

Doug
