Reef safe?
Does anyone have any info on this type of crab? I bought it at my lfs as my wife reallllllllllly liked it since it looked like a anime "cartoonish" crab and was purple. The lfs had it labeled as a red spotted round crab and also said it was reef safe however I can find no information anywhere on the net about these types of crabs. The one I bought was the "smallest" one out of the 3 there and it was about 2" across. The largest one at the lfs was about 3 1/2"-4" across and was still very "cute" according to my wife, lol. I just want to make sure that it doesnt go around hunting my other inverts and making snacks out of my corals...

If nobody knows.. you'll be able to get it in herehttp://rmbr.nus.edu.sg/rbz/biblio/s17/s17rbz.pdf
300 page book though, so might take awhile to find. Should be able to get more info if you find the scientific name. Good luck in your search. Edit: it does look kind of like a 7-11 crab http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/cra.../pr711crab.htm |

general rule is if it's a crab, it's no good. there are exceptions, but i've never seen a crab like that be any good!
|
if you bought it from J&L , in their website was advertised as none reef safe and like to eat corals
|
don't think you need massive claws to algea

I think they're sometimes called 7-11 crabs, but like all crabs they're always either caution or straight up not safe for inverts/fish. Even 'peaceful' types like emeralds can go rogue. The only one that is fine is a porcelain crab and that's because it's actually a shrimp (sorta).

Now I gotta try and get that damn thing out of the hole in my rock and bitch at the guy that sold it to me saying that it was safe with corals and other inverts... |
It was on their website lastweek in New & Noteworthy Livestock

SOB!
Found it hiding in a hole at the bottom of my rock pile with my strawberry snail in its grasp! Now I have to either block it in the hole til tomorrow and hope it doesnt die before I can return it or pull all my live rock apart trying to get it out...! :censored: |

I hope you didn't spend too much money on that. |

My issue is that he flat out lied to me when I asked if it was reef safe and whether it would play nice with my other tank mates. If they had that info on their site and then removed it, my guess is it was due to ppl not wanting to buy it with that disclaimer. Now I'm out $40, a murdered strawberry snail, a messed up rock layout, a cloudy tank, and a crab which I feel bad about putting in isolation. All I know is, they better give me my full refund tomorrow and not that 1/2 price credit crap. |
Don't pull apart your liverock. Instead, set a trap for the crab.
Get a glass from your kitchen, that will be tall enough that he can't crawl out. Put it in the tank, where your crab can get into it from the liverock, but hopefully your hermits will not be able to. Finally, put in a bit of shrimp from your freezer, into the bottom of the glass. This has worked for me a few times, including with a large (for my tank) black hitch-hiker. QT |

I never get sick of saying it. The only reef safe crab is the porcelain crab.

Oh, and they gave me full credit back for the 711, which in turn I spent right away on a sea hare to help with my algae issue and some krill for the softies. |
