Playing with the camera

Here's a few shots, trying to tweak the camera. And a better lens and tripod would help :)

WoW!!! Love the variety of SPS you have in your tank (and fish too)! Boy, would I love the opportunity to see your tank, live! I could spend hours and days playing with my camera in front of your tank ( I would even pay you LOL)! Awesome tank (from one Van Isle guy to another.
PS what are you shooting with?

Aquattro 07-12-2011 04:47 AM

RR, you're welcome over anytime, you can even take pictures for free -lol

I'm using a Nikon D40 with stock lens, having trouble with white balance for starters, gotta run them thru photoshop to clean them up. It sucks, because the colors are much nicer in person. I'm going to try a box for the top down shots, and keep playing with settings. PM me closer to the weekend and see if we can get you in here.

Rice Reef 07-12-2011 04:59 AM

Brad,

Will do! Try setting your WB to 10000K. I find manual adjustment to the WB better. Have fun with it! I know it is frustrating at times but so is growing and caring your reef, right? Now you have two bad and expensive habbits LOL

Aquattro 07-12-2011 05:03 AM

I don't have that option (as far as I know). A bunch of presets, then a custom that gives me an error most of the time, and crap pictures the rest of the time :)

Gorgeous man. Looks better everytime I see it. In the first pic on the right... is that a pearlberry? looks a lot like the frag I just picked up...

Thanks. Not sure which one you mean, but I didn't buy anything called a pearlberry :)

Try increasing your ISO, to increase your shutter speed. This would help as most things in the tank move.

If you are shooting through the glass, turn off all the room lights and get as close to the glass as you can. Also try to shoot at a perpendicular angle so the diffraction doesn't mess with the auto-focus.

Delphinus 07-12-2011 07:44 PM

Wow some really nice colonies going on there. Were these all 1" frags six months ago??

Tony, most of them were, although some were stunted colonies from my previous tank. Nothing more than 3 inches tho, so everything has done well in 6 months.

Steve, that's what I tried, but kept getting an error on the camera...

Lance 07-16-2011 06:47 PM

Wow! Lookin' fine Brad. Those Caps are specially nice.

kobelka 07-16-2011 07:07 PM

Looking fantastic. Great pics. I cant for the life of me figure out how to take nice true looking pics like yours. I looked back at several pages of your many many posts to see if you have a thread about the pictured tank but couldnt find one. Do you have one so the rest of us can see whats under the "hood"? I would love to have results like this one day in my sps tank. Great job!
Thanks
Dave

Aquattro 07-16-2011 07:45 PM

Dave, I don't have a tank thread, just never have the time. It's a pretty simple setup, 180g, 75g sump, ATO, large DIY Ca reactor with Mg media added, carbon changed monthly, use a Zeo reactor and supplements, 3 x 400w Raium MH with supplemental actinic. 50g water change every other week. ER CS8-3 skimmer cleaned often. 1/2hp chiller plumbed remotely to keep things cool, feed at least once a day, usually twice. 2 inch sugarsand on the bottom, probably would rethink that decision :)
Apex controller to keep it all going (not a requirement, just easier). That's it. Pretty easy.
Look up Dez's TOTM thread, he goes into great detail on his stuff, with a simple lazy approach, and it works really well. Pretty much my philosophy, without the huge water changes -lol

Edit: forgot flow. 2x Tunze 6100 streams. Run different profiles from Apex depending on light cycle. Might add a wavebox if I can figure out how to fix it :)

kobelka 07-16-2011 08:40 PM

Thanks. Easy sounding. You and Dez clearly have a knack for things sps.
Either way... Very, very nice!

PoonTang 07-16-2011 09:39 PM

Nice stuff Brad. I especially like the red Digi, color looks insane.

Cade 03-14-2012 04:25 PM

I cant wait to see what it looks like in April:mrgreen::mrgreen:.

sumpfinfishe 03-31-2012 07:47 PM

not too bad for a rookie:mrgreen:

Casey8 03-31-2012 11:10 PM

Brad, this is really a GORGEOUS "little ocean" with dominant sps corals you have created in there.
