Playing with my Canon 100mm Macro Lens with a 2x teleconverter

Hi All,

I've been enjoying everyone's pics on Canreef and so it is only fair that I share some of mine. I have just acquired a 2x teleconverter so I decided to play with it with my macro lens. Using a teleconverter is not as easy as I thought as I did lose some focus. Hope you enjoy them!

Those are some nice macro shots

KevinK 07-02-2011 02:57 AM

darn, why douse my tele converter dont fit on my standard lens, for some reason it ony fits on my 280 lens.

making close up's with a 280 + a 2x tele converter is not working as nice as your pic's, let me try again and se what I come up with

KevinK 07-02-2011 03:46 AM

ok so the auto focus douse not work this close, so it is hands on to get them sharp, meaning when I se them this big, I NEED GLASSES as thy are a bit off sharp,

but as mentioned, the tele converter douse not fit, and on the 280, so 280+2x tele converter thy don't turn out that nice.

I cant get closer than this, ore thy blur up, this is all I can do for now, yours are much nicer

Nice pics RR, I noticed they are a little soft. Your aperture was pretty wide for this kind of shot at f/4.0 try a few more with a much smaller aperture like f/16. You will need a tripod and a very still tank but you'll get sharper pics with a great DOF.

Here's some of mine taken with large f numbers and long exposures using a 150mm macro.

Hi sphelps

Very nice pics and great suggestions! I was shooting by merely pressing
the lens against the glass, without the tripod. I was hoping not have to but
you're right. I'll have to bring out the tripod and also be a bit
more patient to get a greater DOF. I'll try it out in the next couple days.

BTY, what's your take with teleconverters and using extension tubes along with it?

Rice Reef 07-02-2011 05:32 PM

Hi Kevin
Teleconverters do not work on EFS lens, only EF. You may also
want to consider using extension tubes if you are not using macro
lens. The teleconverter will only bring you closer to the subject. I'll pm you
since you are in Vic.

Rice Reef 07-03-2011 11:11 AM

Here are a few more new pics taken today as suggested by sphelps. I used a tripod, remote and lowered the aperchure to f20. Pics turned out much sharper but I was not able to get closer to the subject as I liked to. Perhaps, I will try using extension tubes the next time (will have to buy it first).

Hope you will enjoy these too!

Those are much better, stunning really. Some still a little soft, make sure you're always shooting perpendicular to the glass. I don't have much experience with teleconverters for macro shots, not something I would probably use as the extra glass will probably work against you. I like the extension tubes better but they only allow you to focus on objects at a closer distance so may not always be useful with aquarium pics as tank glass typically gets in the way. As for using both not sure what the goal or results would be like but you could always try. Also consider a lens reversing ring for ultra macros.

This is like the dark side of the moon...time to take some hallucinogens.

Seriously beautiful though.....
