Ferrets
I am thinking of getting one and have talked to some owners. Thoughts?
(Trevor, yeah I know it looks like King Eds in here... ) |
Personally...i say no to ferrets.
Stinky, nippy, and require too much attention. ...but that's just me  |
yeah, make sure you wear shoes. They use to cling to my feet with their teeth when I was changing their cages at the Pet Shop; even when I lifted my feet in the air. I didn't even do anything to provoke the attack.

stinky. very very stinky. no matter what you do.
cute, fun, but stinky. very very stinky. Did I say that already? |
TURDS ARE HUGE... comparative to their body size, ... they like to eat fish... cats.. small dogs.. rodents.. snakes.. pretty much anything.. and .. they have HUGE CRAPS...

Agree about the smell, but you get use to anything after awhile. They do litter train but get the proper box and it's still messy.
Didn't find too nippy and way more involved than keeping a cat. Everytime I see one, I think about getting it but then come to my senses. My answer would be a no. Was interesting when mine use to crawl up my pant leg though. |

I've owned 3 or 4 over the years and some were worst than a small child, always getting into stuff and making a mess, others just the opposite.Seemed the males gave off more of an odour(once fixed and the scent glands removed). If properly trained(like any pet)they do calm down.Mine was only allowed to roam(under partial supervision  )while I was home, and not allowed out of the cage untill they used the litterbox(takes patience to train).Get yourself a good ferret book or you can call the ferret society(there should be one for Calgary,Edmonton has one)they adopt out and come to your house with a few adoptees to see which is suited for you and your house.

The big problem I found with them is that they usually bite out of playfullness (is that a word?) and not out of aggression. This makes it harder to train them to stop. If they only bit when they were ****ed off then it would be easy...just don't **** them off. But nooooo...they bite when they're HAPPY and it may be ok when they bite each other, but they don't realize that humans don't have skin quite as thick as they do!
|
A little trick I used was to put "bitter apple"(found at pet stores for stopping dogs from chewing)on my hands before i pick him up.When they would nip, they'd get the taste of the liquid(doesn't harm them)and learn that when they nip they got a horrible bitter taste in their mouth. After a while they learned not to nip
Most people just give up trying to train them, thats why you see so many in the bargainfinder  Jim |
Sometimes you see a Ferret Rescue society advertising their thing on Channel 10 here in Calgary. It sounds like many are purchased by unwary customers, but they soon give up.

ferrets are fun pets but a ton of work, big smelly poop, they get into everything, and they smell no mater how often you clean them and their area, Im sure you could keep the smell down if they were kept in a bare stainless steel box that was cleaned 3 times a day, but you cant really do that. even if you do get used to the smell, if you dont have people over ever youll be fine, otherwise they will get sick at the door...
Id love to have some, but not the best house pet |
and they have huge craps...

anybody here had bearded dragon lizards? perportionatly the largest, smelliest craps in the world....
|
My tenant has 3 of them.
They are, without a doubt, the most boring lizards in the world. Not to mention they stink and have ginormous craps! is ginormous a word? heh. |
lol, just making a point Christy, I worked in a pet store and had to clean up after the ferrets... cripes...
I thought about bearded dragons once but I just can't stand the idea of bringing crickets etc into the house on purpose. Doug |
Ahh, this thread gave me a good laugh. I especially like the "ginormous craps" comment.
