Kona Trip: First of the dives
So I still have a few dives left, first few dives were getting my open water cert, so didnt take the camera as I become a air huffer with the camera as I become quite frantic chasing fish around.
But here is a quick video that ive had time to post, of a cave entrance and the exit to some amazing coral. http://www.facebook.com/v/10150198972643034 http://www.facebook.com/v/10150199045748034 |
More to come, just busy enjoying hawaii, and ill post pictures too later!
Dont mind my newbish pics either, im still learning how to fight the current out here as its very strong right now and im still learning the art of scuba to its fullest! |
Who are you diving with? I just came back from there myself. The reefs off the Kona shore are pretty incredible. Can't wait to go back.
|
Incidentally you have your facebook album locked out so we can't see the pictures or videos (well anyone on your fb friend list probably can but ..). 3 alternatives I could suggest for you: picasaweb, flickr, or photobucket - then you can also upload high-res versions of the pics.
Enjoy the rest of your trip! |
Alrighty.. Ill figure somthing out soon.. Im diving with Kona dive company, their logo has the hammerhead in the middle of the caption.
|
and can someone let me know if you can see them now.. I think I changed some proper settings for the videos.. let me know!
|
Yeah I can see them now - thanks :)
Kona Dive Company - that's who I dove with too. Awesome group of folks! |
Ya, there have been two cases of tiger shark board bites this week, and we have been looking for sharks every day with Dave our dive master, he is a shark guru, he used to head a shark research lab in the US, and has since retired from that to pursue diving.. but has dove with everything!
He is very reassuring and very calm as he sticks his head into holes of caves looking for dorsil fins! |
Kerry says to me the day I went out that "she just HAD to meet the weirdo who asked to see a golden dwarf eel". Tell her the Golden Dwarf eel requester says hi.
This was one of the images I was able to get of him: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-d...c/IMG_2587.JPG |
Ill be sure too if she is on the boat for our saturday night dive with the mantas!
I got this nice one of a trumpet fish, but all the good shots I could have got all seemed to be when I didnt have the camera during the technical dive portions http://ogq98a.blu.livefilestore.com/...081.JPG?psid=1 |
That is so wicked. I wanted to do the nighttime Manta dive but got sooo sick when I was there (you can take the Calgarian out of the cold, but you can't take the cold out of the Calgarian). I was in peril of not being able to dive at all but the last weekend my sinuses had cleared out just enough to sneak in ONE dive with the guys before getting into that whole "no diving 24 hours before going on a plane" thing. Did see one Manta from the boat though, thing must have been 16 feet across just under the waves. Wowza.
Thanks for sharing these man, I'm jealous (I shouldn't be, but I am, haha). |
Incidentally, the email notification for this thread showed a whole pile of picture links which don't seem to show up in the thread itself. Not sure what's up with that.
|
They should all be there now... I hope.. should be 16 pics laid out 2x8
|
I did some snorkeling today and got some fantastic pictures.. and we are snorkeling Captin cooks memorial soon, and that is rated the islands best snorkel place.. so I should have some amazing shots from that.. Just as a reference of depth.. that Long Fin Anthia (85ft), Stocky Hawkfish (1st shot: 65ft, 2nd shot: 90ft), Yellow Margin Moray Eel (95ft), view of the slope in garden eel cove (110ft)
|
Kealakekua Bay (where Captain Cook Memorial is) is a fantastic snorkeling spot, you'll like that. You'll probably be greeted by dolphins when you get there. The entrance to that bay is where some houses had to be sunk by the coast guard back in March since they had been swept off their foundations (thankfully only the houses were casualties in that), I guess it drops off very quickly and they are now sitting in 300' depth.
When I was there it was raining tonnes (not the in the bay itself but nearby) and the rocks on shore were literally weeping with freshwater and consequently there was a lot of intermix occlusion near the surface (had this in most snorkel spots when I was there), just had to dive down under it but when you're snorkeling you run out of air quicker :) .. Love snorkeling still but it's one more reason I want to do more diving from now on - get under that surface mixing layer and stay under long enough to see stuff! I don't have my ticket yet. Actually this trip was supposed to be where I could do my open water but that winter cold that pretty much dropped me to the ground unfortunately meant that had to be canceled. :( Oh well, a reason to go back some other year I guess. Looking forward to more pics. :) |

those are some amazing pics mang....love the one of the arc eye hawk....and the orange shoulders are incredible.....
|
The best one that I couldnt get a picture of was a black long nose butterfly fish. They are only black in Kona Hawaii. A aquarium even took one and introduced it to their tanks as the rare black.. only to have it turn back to a normal yellow long nose... Thing is.. shooting pictures of a timid black are exceedingly difficult in a tough surging water..
|
I hate that camera!
looks like your enjoying all the local joys |
Haha.. why do you hate your camera? Because it is here?
|
No cause it didn't work for me LOL
|
Hahaha.. Hey, ive given it my fair share of smacks for it suddenly deciding it doesnt want to take a picture of the huge Viper Moray eel that I want a picture of.. and while im fighting with it the eel backs away.. or the octupus that we ran into.. twice! but it is happy to take double pictures of the racoon butterflys that you have to push out of the way of the fish your trying to take a picture of cause they love to float in front of your mask.. as seen in the video ill be uploading here in a bit!

Well, sorry for these:

http://ogq48a.blu.livefilestore.com/...006.JPG?psid=1http://ogq48a.blu.livefilestore.com/...012.JPG?psid=1 http://ogq48a.blu.livefilestore.com/...015.JPG?psid=1http://ogq48a.blu.livefilestore.com/...022.JPG?psid=1 http://ogq48a.blu.livefilestore.com/...023.JPG?psid=1http://ogq48a.blu.livefilestore.com/...030.JPG?psid=1 A couple notes.. Picasso Triggerfish + egg nest = not your friend at all.. kinda cute when the little guys try to get in your face.. and your like oh stop it silly thing.. but when the big ones like 12"+ come at you.. not so cute... The hotel I walk over to for some snorkeling is the Fairmont Orchid.. super nice and I feel a tad outa place just cutting through.. and turtles everywhere! |

Very nice. My husband and I are thinking of going to the big Island for our late honeymoon. We never had one when we got married. Thing is Im the fish chick and hubby could care less and he doesnt swim. So snorkeling is out of the picture i guess. Thanks for sharing those lovely pics.
|
If it counts for anything, some of the people I scuba'd with were terrible swimmers!
I think maybe you should try to talk him into a snuba trip at least. They float your tank on the surface and you get like 40ft of line. Maybe you can get him addicted! The big island is awesome. Hilo side has amazing hiking and no swiming things, the Kona side has some amazing dive sites and surfing. So each side of the island has somthing for everyone! |
Yea we were thinking of doing a week long thing checking out as much of the island as possible. Im a geography major so Im super interested in the volcano aspect of it as well as the marine life. Both of us love hiking and historic things and sight seeing. I want to try to get him to do at least one dive, heck even snorkel. Something is better than nothing. I wanted to do the manta ray thing but my husband thinks they are like sting rays and doesnt want to go the same way as steve irwin. I told him chances of that with a sting ray are very very slim but he dosnt listen to reason lol. oh well.
|
You can do the Manta Dive, he can cling on too the floaty rings with the snorkelers :P With anyluck you will get to see Rosie the red trumpet fish that is stupidly friendly. I turned my head and she was sitting on my shoulder staring at me. Apperently she does that to alot of divers during the manta dives.
If you are only going to do one dive. I have a recommendation. Call Kohala Divers, its near Hawi, and ask to do Puako 38. Its the turtle cleaning site dive. Its where I saw the most diverse set of animals. Everything from 6foot long Morays, turtles, white tip reef sharks, giant porcupine puffers, nudibranches, morish idols even saw sun coral colonies in the 1000's lining the roofs of some of the caverns you will go in. Snorkel wise, go check out captin cooks monument. Just dont!!! I repeat DONT! rent a kayak. You get there, and they are like ok, here is your $60 bag of coffee and free kayak.. your like what.. I thought I was just renting a kayak, ya, and coffee! So you paddle over only to find out you cant dock your boat cause its illegal to drag your kayak on shore, so you have to tow your kayak behind you. Sucks, trust me.. didnt read the fine print! I have a dive map of the big island if you have any other questions, just as reference. It shows 3 dive sites worth mention on the hilo side, and close to 30 on the kona side. :) |
