Can you bring live rocks on the plane

does anyone know if you can bring live rocks on the plane to bring them from cal to van??

UnderWorldAquatics 01-16-2004 06:44 AM

if you have a proper cities permit you can, or you an go to jail without one.... its not worth shipping your own imported rock unless you are bringing in over a few hundred pounds of liverock at a time

Namscam 01-16-2004 06:46 AM

so i cant bring rocks from calgary to vancouver without a permit??

kris 01-16-2004 08:31 AM

i thought cities where only requierd when crossing international borders.

as CAL and VAn are in Canada a cities permet should nto be requierd

Namscam 01-16-2004 08:58 AM

thats what i thought too..does n e know the specific details about this??

MitchM 01-16-2004 01:17 PM

"Cal" could also mean California....

No permit needed, but the number of a good chiropractor maybe.

Mitch

From Calgary, no permit; from California, yes permit.

Live rock is listed in CITES as Scleractinia and is an Appendix II restriction, which unfortunately means it must be accompanied by a CITES certificate if you attempt to bring any into Canada from outside Canada.

But from point A in Canada to point B in Canada, knock yerself out  Once it's in, it's in... No different than buying a box of liverock from, say, J&L via mail-order.

I read it wrong on the first read too.

They are right no cites necessary.

Are you taking it with you as a passenger ?

Weight & size Restrictions ?
Packing ?

Or are you going to just use cargo, there are a few problems that arise there...................

Just a few questions I would ask.

sorry, you should have said the desolate wasteland of western canada(calgary) I thought you meant california, from what I can recall, if you have a full box of rock they might not let you even put it in cargo as it will be too heavy, and definatly not let you bring it as carry on, too heavy,(unless you pay extra) if you do mannage, make sure you get extra heat packs and seal the box well of they will complain of the stench even if its cured, personally its not worth the hassle if you ask me, get it shipped greyhound or some other way... better yet buy from a decent local store, the rock wont be any different over here....

Quinn 01-16-2004 04:46 PM

I think he must be thinking of buying used rock, because the rock here is far more expensive than what you would find in Vancouver.

UnderWorldAquatics 01-16-2004 04:52 PM

lol, as I actualy just read what Im replying to, I notice that the transfer is going from east to west... lol

Namscam 01-16-2004 05:25 PM

My mistake...I m sorry if I confused everyone..It was late and I was too tired to write the whole thing out...Thank you for your response eeryone...And I intend to package it in my suit case..It wont be much just about 10 lbs or soo..well actually my brother is going to be bringing it because Deb was sellinng it and since he was there mind as well as bring back some because its just on the way..

Tman1973 01-16-2004 05:57 PM

I would just check with the airline to ensure that they will allow you to bring it on the aircraft. Some will not allow salt water on there planes because it can be corrosive to the aircraft if not package correctly.

I'd suggest using cargo so you’re covered and contact a local fish store for the proper packing material.

Would it be any different bringing Live Rock in to Canada if you had a LFS bill of sale from the US. Just checking. I don't think it would be worth the effort to lug around airport unless it was a smoking deal. Remember its $10 for me to buy locally. That might make me think twice.

BCOrchidGuy 01-16-2004 06:33 PM

Marcus it's $5.99/lbs here, someone said J&L sold them some recently for $3.99/lbs that would be worth it if you're buying a fair amount. The bill of sale from a LFS in the USA wouldn't be enough to bring it into Canada, it needs that Cites permit.

I always make sure that anything with sw in it can be stowed under the seat. Last time they tried to put my Moorish Idol up top, because the bag was quite large, and I said I don't think you want to put live fish up there...and she said ah, no, just make sure no one can trip over it.

Namscam 01-17-2004 01:39 AM

thanks for the info deb and also the rocks
