Some People Clean Algae, I Clean Critters

every single day when i wake up my glass is covered in little critters. i've identified hydroid jellyfish and copepods but there's other little bugs as well.
my water is littered with these things and they're floating all over my tank

anyway to lower the population of these things, i want my water and glass to look clear and not like its constantly snowing

try running a 100 micron or smaller filter sock and mechanically remove them.

Make sure you take it out and replace it with a new one every 2-3 days or atleast throughly wash it at that interval to prevent nitrate spike.

at 20 bucks or so per sock doesnt really seem very economical

Huh? $20? They are way less than that and you can wash them out repeatedly before they wear out.

Filter socks should be about $10 each, and are fully reusable by washing in the washing machine without soaps. Probably your best bet for getting the jellies.

However, these bugs you're seeing sound like pods. There are many different kinds.

when i first started the tank and wanted to clear up the water from the sand i went and bought a sock from the LFS and they charged me like 18.99 for it. used it for 3 days, tried to clean it and could never get it clean so i threw it away.

cathyg_99 04-30-2011 11:29 PM

ebay for 6.99 each... big als also has them for 2 filter sock refills for $19.99... ive just been throwing them in the wash when i have about 10 dirty ones and they come out WHITE like new

put a wrasse in the tank......that will take care of most pod type critters....

You can bleach filter socks too. You just have to dry thoroughly before use so the chlorine will off-gas.

I guess you picked the wrong hobby to be in. you water will never get super clean in a SW tank there will be always be some form of life in your tank.

just get a Mandarine goby and a 6 line wrass and you will see a lot less bugs in no time.

toytech 05-01-2011 05:31 AM

Bannana wrasse , mine eats everything even bristle worms ( wish he wouldent) , and isnt mean like a 6 line .

MarkoD 05-01-2011 01:58 PM

I think its cuz I only have 3 fish and 250 gallons of total volume...... Lots of room for them to hide and reproduce without getting eaten

dunl 05-01-2011 02:40 PM

That would do it.

At that size, if it is established you should have no problem sustaining a mandarin goby.

its only about a month and a half old

Give it time. Perhaps you have a overpopulation of certain "critters" that are thriving due to your cycle. Over time as the cycle and ecosystem stabilizes they might drop in population. The whole circle of life thing but in an aquarium.
