things are dieing!

What would make all your corals, anemones, snails and lastly bristle worms die in your tank? All the fish are fine, but everything else.
We were told that maybe, ...it was the ich treatment that we did.
Then we were told maybe we have copper in our water, so we bought 2 packs of CupriSorb. They have not discolored at all.
Because everything died it caused lots of ammonia, so we have done 6 water changes in 2 weeks.
We still have some polyps but they are all closed up.

I've looked on the internet and have not found anything that is usefull.

I assume you've tested all your water?

anything out of whack?

possible anything was introduced to the tank without knowing so? i find kids and drunk friends are a reef's worst enemy!!

What type of ich treatment did you use?

Kimmy101 02-09-2011 04:15 AM

The brand name is Nox-Ich.

Mandosh 02-09-2011 04:33 AM

If Nox-ich is malachite green based (which I'm pretty sure it is) it is deadly to inverts.

I'm not familiar with the brand but I do know alot of the ich treatments kill inverts and corals when we treated ich we used "ich attack" and that one is reef safe I would read your bottle and see what it says

cordeiro 02-09-2011 04:53 AM

Was just reading up on noxich an it is not reef safe it will kill inverts and corals so I would go with that's what happened to the tank

++++1:cry: Too bad.

time to throw it all out and start over.
The chemical has probably leached into the rocks. you'll never get it all out.
Might leach into the silicone too.
Unless you want to go fish only, that tank is done.

Most ich treatment as far as i know have copper in them

Nox-Ich is malachite green based. While it does not contain copper (C23H5N2) is is harmful to inverts. The problem you have on your hands right now is the chain reaction caused by the death of the livestock and the spike in toxicity. If you have another tank you might want to move your remaining livestock to a temporary home while you deal with the problem tank. If your main tank is small you might be wise to gut it just to be on the safe side. If you are still unsure about the copper thing I have a copper test kit that you are welcome to borrow (just pm me). Hopefully you have caught the problem in time to prevent any more death.

Although the chemical (Malachite green) can leach into the rock and silicone, it won't be released back into the water like copper would. Carbon will remove what is left in the water.

viperfish 02-09-2011 06:00 AM

+1 on the carbon, some Purigen or Chemi Pure in addition to the carbon wouldn't hurt either.

Kimmy101 02-09-2011 08:09 PM

Sigh

Thanks alot for all the info, I guess we will have to get a new tank for corals.

Mandosh 02-09-2011 09:44 PM

If your copper test is negative you don't need a new tank. Coral will be fine. Once M.G. is absorbed its basically gone. Water changes and carbon and you'll be good to go.
