Ressurection

Its been a fun filled 6 weeks!

A week before Christmas Art and I went to grab a coffee. It was a nice walk.
As soon as we opened the door it was obvious by the smell of something shorting out that something was wrong. We walked into the fish room and there was water everywhere. All we could say was OMFG.. To quote Art.. Its the bottom and that female dog is going to leak out to the last drop. No pics for the rest of the night, it was a little tense.

the next morning. We put a level on the stand, everything was still level.

Brad came the next moring and took all the fish, most of the acros and a wack of LPS home. Im so thankful that he had just set up a big tank and had alot of room in it.

I took the sump tank out and modified the plumbing to hold some rock and my ricordea. I had an old T5 strip for light.. atleast it kept the mushrooms and some rock alive. Some of the rock i wanted to use again was bleached to kill the aptaisa and algea and was put in a 55 gallon bin to cook. After 4 weeks i bought a few pieces of newly harvested live rock to seed it. The rest of the rock is sitting in a bin outside on the deck.

The zoas and some LPS were scrunched into my frag tank.

fast forward about 2 weeks and the new tank was delivered. After letting it cure for a week a defect in the bottom was discovered, sooo back to the shop for a new bottom. Fast forward another 2 weeks.

Since we had the time, we repainted the stand. The sump was put back in and the skimmer put back online.

Looks great Shelley. Is the new tank the same dimensions, just shallower?

Yup its 4x2x16" Its just going to replace the other frag tank, but I wanted some rock down the middle and I have a whole bin of the branches so might as well use a few of them. The rest of the branches will be put in storage.. It's really hard to get them anymore.

Sounds like you went through a bit of a nightmare, however the new tank looks great! I love the tonga branch rock and Mt. VeZOOvias is awesome :thumb:

Aquattro 02-06-2011 02:14 PM

It's not all going to fit :)

Northernseacorals 02-06-2011 02:23 PM

Looks beautiful !

phi delt reefer 02-06-2011 02:28 PM

did you ever find out why the base cracked?

edit;

no that i have looked at the pic again i think i know why.

I have read that a tank that has that black rim should be placed on a flat SOLID surface, not a soft surface like that foam. Only tanks that are trim-less should be on foam (acrylic or glass). Maybe someone else can chime in this.

Great resurrection though - congrats on the successful rebuild.

lastlight 02-06-2011 03:41 PM

Off to a great start there. I love the look of all your zoas etc on the clean rocks the colours just pop! Good luck with this tank... I know all too well how nicely a cracked bottom drains a tank!

Delphinus 02-06-2011 05:23 PM

Wow crazy nice resurrection from the ashes. Great colours!

I'm curious, what was the defect that had you replacing the bottom in the new tank? A chip or something else?

Shouldn't you be out doing something constructive? Like running, exercising the dogs, squashing, making your woman smile, or doing a water change for my corals?

Thanks everyone.. It's progressing a little every day.

I don't know why it cracked.. Coulda been the pink foam, coulda been the balast mounted to the stand frame, I've been told that the heat from that could have heated up the bottom unevenly.. I've accepted that I will never know why it cracked.

The new tank had a deep long scratch in the bottom that made me nervous. IMO it was just a little too deep to be cosmetic. the manufacturer was right on it and agreed that better safe than sorry, so they deplaced the bottom.

I played with the rock a little but today, and got it where I like it.. I think lol

Tomorrow after work I think I will make Chalice corner.
