where do you get your "rare" SPS?

As you may have read in my FTOTM article we are going to do a SPS makeover in the tank...
some common SPS will be sold and we want more "rare" ones...

We want more blue, more red, more yellow...
less green ;)

Where do you get your unusual SPS in Canada?

Please tell me about your experiences about what you got.
If it was ship to you, how did it went?

kien 02-02-2011 03:33 PM

What do you define as rare? :)

Most of what I would call rare I've gotten from Oceanic Corals. Great service and shipping was perfect. Would not hesitate to order from them again. I have also purchased corals from LFS',mostly Red Coral in Calgary which will ship as well! Plus now they have a kick ass online store you can use.

Coral Master also ships and I've gotten great frags from him.

And finally, local hobbyists around the province. Some will ship if you ask nicely.

Oceanic Corals for me as well, but I can drive there and pick them up.. Great crew working there,,,excellent customer service.

I don't know exactly how rare his stuff is, but Dez has many VERY nice frags all the time and he was, and probably still is willing to ship.

Bump for Red Coral!!!

Customer service is excellent!!!

i know its not sps (yet) but Andrew overat pisces had been putting out awsome frags in the last little bit. Mostly really nice lps (chalices, bubble coral, favias, acans) and there starting to get into sps. The nicest thing about him is if theres something you like in a display he will frag it for you. He usually has a pretty good supply of stuff in the back too so i sugest going to find him if you stop there.

That's great but I don't think they ship frags or corals of any sort for that matter :)

Sweet! I didn't know that! Do they have corals on their website that we can order from?

Nebthet 02-02-2011 10:17 PM

Interesting thread... do any of these suppliers ship overnight, but not to an airport for pick up, for those of us who don't drive??

I know fedex was quick with overnight from Texas to my door in Ontario, but most of the Canadian retailers out west, have a ship to the airport only, and there are a lot of us who don't drive so are unable to get to an airport to pick up, and are looking for alternatives.. If it wasn't for that issues, Coral Master, Oceanic Corals and Red Corals would have made a pretty penny off of me by now.. LOL

I buy any SPS, and let them all turn brown... They become rare because of the shade of brown I can achieve. Plus with a little RTN/STN increases their value.

Just kidding, but when I was buying SPS, and when I start again.... I like what Kevin @ Red Coral brings in. Greg/Snappy of course has alot of neat stuff.

RedCoralOnlineStore 02-02-2011 11:08 PM

Thought I'd chime in that we do ship overnight Fedex to your door in all major centres across Canada. As long as Fedex can get there overnight, we can do it. And we have a nice order coming in this week with sps! Check back soon as I will be updating the website! Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Carmen,
Is the livestock section up to date, if so, how often do you update?

The website is updated weekly and is due to be updated this Friday. We receive weekly orders and I try to photograph and update the new stuff as soon as the order arrives (usually Thursday or Fridays). I will remove corals sold throughout the week but I am not into the store everyday so I may miss a couple. Fish listed on the site will not all be in stock but can usually be ordered with our next weekly order. Thanks for looking!

thanks for your replies!

There are only about 5 people in Prince George who have been successfully keeping SPS for the last few years. Therefore everything we have is rare.

Snappy 02-04-2011 03:25 PM

Coral Master - Still the best!

Coral Master has over 3 years experience of over night shipping right to your door. I have been shipping all across Canada very successfully, from Vancouver Island all the way to the Altlantic & and most cities in between.
Check out the Testimonial & Guarantee pages on my website.
http://coralmaster.com/testimonials.html
http://coralmaster.com/shipping_info.html

Coral Master was the first in Canada to offer a ARRIVE ALIVE - STAY ALIVE 10 day GUARANTEE.
& if by chance I don't have what you're looking for,
my other recommendation would be Oceanic Corals who also ships over night to your door.

If you ever get to Ottawa, which is not too far, Aqua Valley has very nice stuff and great quality. I'm in T.O and have met him at the Airport a few times and everything I have bought from him has done extremely well, even fish that I couldn't seem to get local to survive, his thrived.

I always avoid using the term "rare", just something about it that bugs me..."unusual" was more accurate to me.

If you are starting your seach for more interesting, unusual SPS consider visiting some local hobbyists. Most are more than welcome to have you by from time to time. That being said, you should have good luck with most LFS's, and online vendors these days.

josie 02-04-2011 06:13 PM

Yes!
UNUSUAL!
that's a good term!
and that's what I'm looking for! ;)

If you get to know your LFS it helps as well - yesterday I picked up what he considers an "unusual" montipora (I think it's a montipora malampaya) with seafoam coloured polyps - a real neat-o coral that we've both not seen.

Certainly trading with other hobbyists is good too - it can help distribute a piece widely turning a "rare" piece into one that a few more people have in case your piece dies for whatever reason, so you might be able to track a piece down later.
