New 300

Tell me what you think. Here is a plan of what I have in the works, I've been shut down for a couple of months an have started to plan out some details about the new tank. Dimensions will be 72" long, 42" wide and 24" tall, with a true centre overflow. Give or take about 300 gallons total. I am going with a steel stand construction, with a frag tank and a sump underneath. Probably about 400 gallons total.

Sweet setup need a good strong stand for that bad boy.

The Codfather 01-15-2011 03:57 AM

You bet, I have gone with 2"x2"x3/16"wall, just like we talk about about a month ago. It will be plenty strong, benefit of having a welding shop at your disposal is you don't have to mess around.

lastlight 01-15-2011 03:58 AM

Your goal is to have a walk-around? The idea is very cool but something I'd personally only do with a 6x6 footprint or bigger. You're building a tank with such an awesomely wide footprint but then you more than chop it in half with the overflow there. It's a real commitment. I'm sure you can hide it with rock but then that encroaches on your space even more.

That might be just me though. I'm sure you'll make it happen right.

The Codfather 01-15-2011 04:02 AM

I was going to do a room divider at first, but my wife was kind enough to let me do a peninsula style. Here's a couple of pics of the demo.
The wall before I got started(sorry Joe, you'll have another wall soon)

This is what I was going to put the tank.

And now with the rest removed.

Nice work, that is what I would have done for that size as well. I should go into consulting for builds and charge a minimal fee to feed my reef addiction:lol:

looks really cool

I can't wait to see it

Brett,
I would have loved to go bigger, but I think I have almost overstepped my boundaries as it is. The centre overflow will be 18"x6" and I have something in mind to blend it in.

Thanks man, this one's going to be the last so I have a few things up my sleeve for this on.

BlueTang<3 01-15-2011 04:07 AM

Sounds tasty:biggrin:

I have a lady in Calgary that want to trade me her 7.5' x 2.5' x 2.5' tank for my 65 gal hex. So I would have to build a stand similar.

The Codfather 01-15-2011 04:12 AM

So a few beer down and a bit of welding and here we sit now.

Hey, Sylvia is cool with all this, I actually think she might even like the idea so far. Here's hoping anyway.

This one worked out well, brought home the lazer level and shot everything in before welding it up. Worked sweet, everything is perfectly level.

bauder1986 01-15-2011 04:15 AM

Very impressive thus far! You managed to make everything look organized compared to what the rest of us go through on tank builds that involve the demo of a section of the house!

fishoholic 01-15-2011 04:16 AM

Wow! I vaguely remember talking about you setting up a large tank in your basement and I remember thinking/partly discussing where'd you put it.....and I remember thinking first you just have to knock out that wall.....and then you'd have lots of room, however I don't remember if I said that out load of not, so WOW you actually did that! :surprise: Cool!

I also love that the tank is going to be 42" wide, I really like the look of wide tanks. The stand looks great

Ya, I've had a few weeks to plan this one out. I'm not going to rush this one, going to take my time and finish everything right the first time around.

The Grizz 01-15-2011 04:17 AM

SWEET!!!! TIG welding in the house. My wife would have to be gone for the day for me to get away with that.

Happy with the look so far, I'm glad I can do a peninsula, I think it will really look sweet after it's all set up.

lastlight 01-15-2011 04:18 AM

omg that stand is SO kickass!

I didn't know you can weld right in your freaking house haha. I love the elevated stand in there. Wow I just love that stand!

Ya, she took the kids to the mall and I brought home a portable snorkel from work, once again, nice to have these to borrow from work. When we were done you would have never noticed we were burning down stairs. And ya, TIG is so the way to go, nice and neat.

Ya, suitcase welder, pretty sweet little boxes. Nice part is it plugs into a 110v outlet.
I think the stand kicks ass too, it's solid as a rock and dead level. Might be a bit overkill, but what the hell, doesn't cost me any extra to beef it up a little. God I love steel.

That is deffinately a plus, I can build a whole setup in the shop then move it in piece by piece.

Awesome work dude I will be watching this one for sure. Isn't it funny how when you are building everything yourself you tend to go overkill. I know i did with my stand as well.

reefwars 01-15-2011 05:55 AM

bob!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! sweet is all i can say lol love the design and love the dimensions.... my overflow box is the same 18x6 and i wouldnt of changed it if i had my time back it works out great:) are you going herbie??? closed loop??

fishytime 01-15-2011 06:10 AM

So you gone and done it huh Bobbybye????? F-in sweet....I got the impression that this tank was going to be a ways away from how you were talkin when last we talked.....good to see that not only is the ball rollin but its knockin down some pins too:biggrin:.....

paddyob 01-15-2011 02:31 PM

Tank is looking good for a start.

I also noticed you pay in beer. Call me. I work for beer. Ha ha!

But seriously, if you need any help Bob, let me know.

Skimmerking 01-15-2011 03:14 PM

Wow man that is looking great. I remember bringing over the Skimmer with Laurie, you had the tank in-wall and with all Wes's stuff and u were talking about doing something like that ... good going man,.

The Codfather 01-15-2011 08:01 PM

Thanks for the offer guys. It just so happens my glass is in town and I have to pack it in down stairs, so I might be calling in a few favours in the next couple of days.
That being said I have to go and finish the stand off, the welding is all done just have to prime and paint up all the welds and some of the surrounding area. Cut the shelves up so have to seal up those as well before the sump and frag tanks are made up.
Well what you saw so far is about 4 days work so I hope you don't expect this amount of pics daily.

Skimmerking 01-15-2011 09:27 PM

We expect more Pic's Cod what is the matter with ya have a party and bring the glass in and

Getter Done!!!!!!!!!!!

steve fedyk 01-16-2011 01:20 AM

Wow coming along nice Bob. I like how you welded in the house my wife would kill me! I also work for beer and I still have to return the favor:wink:

fishytime 01-16-2011 02:14 AM

Destruction is one of the things I do best Doug. The problem is getting everything back together again.

Delphinus 01-16-2011 05:21 AM

Man, such a clean wall removal. I'd have drywall dust clear into the next country and there is nary a speck of it anywhere...

Neat idea with the centre overflow, you don't see too many 4 sided viewing tanks too often ... which is too bad I think it's kinda neat. Good on ya' man.

Tony, I had to keep it clean for two reasons:
1-If I leave a huge mess, my wife would kill me. I'm serious.
2-Two very active little girls in the house. Self explanatory.
As for the centre overflow, I am really going to try to generate a good sized wave in this thing, and a centre overflow I believe is the only way I am going to accomplish it. I'm quite happy with everything so far, a long way to go though.

The Grizz 01-16-2011 05:47 AM

I too make a huge mess with demo but my wife has learned to just deal with it if she want something done fast:lol: and all my kids are grown up, it's just the grand kids and the occasional guest who have little ones so that is not to much to deal with.

I look forward to more updates and pics too.
