BLACK NUDIS ?

well late on christmas eve i looked into the tank just before i was about to goto bed... i found what appeared to be black nudis on my zoas... not knowing what they were i removed them... they were latched onto the zoas so tight that they took skin with them when i pulled them off.... the zoas seem no worse for ware but i am looking for info ...

ANYONE??????????????????????????????????

also what i thawt was a powerful dose of coral dip did not even phase them before i removed them manually... the dose killed everything else such as bristles and pods..

There are so many kind of nudis and many of them look very similar to each other, so getting an ID could be difficult. Most nudis have very selective diets, and most will not survive long term in our reefs, so pest or not it is usually best to remove them since many will release a lot or a little toxin when they die. I'm the surprised the Nudis themselves had strong enough tissue that they could take Zoa tissue with them without that Nudi ripping.

sounds like zoa eating nudis to me , they are not good and probably came in on a frag or coral.take out any you see and if its just a small zoa frag give it a freshwater dip but they are quite hard to get rid of:)

ElGuappo 12-27-2010 02:15 AM

i was suprised they didnt rip aswell... especially the ones that were on two polps and i could get underneath....

they were a matte black about 5-8 mm in lenth and had little horns or spikes on thier back...

i always remove anything i havnt put in my tank if i can... if research leads me to believe its ok then i will leave it in... but this was like 4 in the morning and i just finished wrapping gifts.... nudis are one thing that i would never second guess and would always remove upon sight...

if so id quickly get rid of them as fast as you could a friend of mine has some and they did a fine bit of damage before we figured out what was going on.

wingedfish 12-27-2010 02:47 AM

might also be black stomatella I have a couple and they are good guys, only out at night.

Myka 12-27-2010 04:41 AM

typical Zoa Eating Nudis are grey-brown as you pictured reefwars, not black. Having said that though, since he found them on the Zoas they are likely some sort of Zoa Eating Nudi, but who knows?

Wingedfish, good call on the black Stomatellas, but they shouldn't be that difficult to remove, and a coral dip would kill them or at least make them fall off.

ElGuappo 12-27-2010 08:42 PM

unfortunatlly they were not stomatellas and fortunatlly they looked nothing like the pics below... the horns or spikes were quite subtle.. i wish i could have gotten pics.... yes they were entirelly black...

black doris seaslug? that's the only matte black one i know anyway.

daniella3d 12-28-2010 12:28 AM

Zoa eating nudi are not black, they are beige or light brown.

Does it look like this? if so, they are sponge eaters and will not toutch the zoanthids:

There is another creature that look similar and does not have the white tip on the entennas but I can't rememnber the name, it's stuctus? or something like that and also does not eat the zoanthids.

daniella3d 12-29-2010 02:21 AM
