aquarium paint
 Hi
Can anyone tell me what kind of paint to use for the exterior of my tank. I find the tape on style backings always split and get alot of salt creep. I was told by LFS to use marine paint.? The paint store suggested sanding the glass first?! I'm confused on what route to go and don't want to screw up a new aquarium. P.S. what's a good color? Thanks. Toni |
I just spray-painted a piece of paper black and taped it to my tank...

exterior latex is what we use.
Sometimes it shows a little water lines on the outside, but you cant see it from the inside. Wendell |
Don't sand the glass!!! Just make sure it's very clean and do several light coats. Exterior latex is fine.

Brad agrees with me

I didnt sand the glass. I used spray paint... blue. exterior something or other. Ask the paint dept at home depot or revy :)

Last time I painted a tank I used the small cans of rustoleum paint as it was very inexpensive. I bought a can of blue and a can of black and mixed it till I got the right color.

I've been experimenting with a "film type" material I purchase from a local plastics supplier. I can't recall what it's called  and it's too early in the morning to go searching through my catalogue... .
It's similar to window tinting material but it's thicker and more durable. Almost a "static adhesive. Nice color choices and easy to work with. |
I cleaned the glass and used a marine acrylic paint. it will take a few layers but it works good.

I used a sheet of black plastic board that I got from Industrial Plastics.
It's about 1/4" thick and comes in many colors other than black. It sells for about $4 for a 4x8 sheet, so I can replace the older one when it gets warped or moisture damage. |
