I don't know what kind of coral that is, but what is the fish that's in the picture? It sure is a beauty.

He's pretty pink to be a green anything. Thanks for the id, it's a great looking fish.

Sorta looks like the orange/green formosa I picked up from John (Lobsterboy). Is there any orange in the body?

ScubaSteve 10-06-2010 07:30 PM

Well, based on the axial corallites it's an acropora and I could probably go as for to say that it is likely a Green Staghorn Acropora. Now Staghorn is a pretty all-encompassing name; without seeing the skeleton behind the polyps there I can't really tell you which one it is exactly. I'd guess that it is A. cervicornis or A. formosa.

These don't always have the most shocking colours but you can find them in most any shade with green, blue, purple and brown being the most common.

Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm still workin' on my SPS ID-fu.

josie 10-06-2010 07:40 PM

ok, thanks
so I'll get it mad and take a pic of it when polyps are close ;)

Chowder 10-06-2010 07:58 PM

I have one that is quit the same. I asked for an ID on RC. Was told it is a A.Papillare.

+1 to Kevin and Brett's id of A. formosa

chris88 10-06-2010 09:43 PM

a. formosa aka bali green slimmer. Its fast growing and easy to keep.

josie 10-06-2010 09:59 PM

here's a pic polyps closed:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...50g/stagID.jpg

so does formosa comes in other colors???

ScubaSteve 10-06-2010 10:17 PM

Ya, I'm still pretty sure that's a A. formosa though the corallites are a little smaller than I'd expect. This might be because the picture is seeing more of the corallites that are underneath and on the sides of the branches. If the corallites facing the light are larger, then I'd say definitely A. formosa.

It also looks similar to A. youngei, A. Abrolhosensis and A. nobilis but I don't really think it's any of those.

Like I said, green, blue, purple and brown are the common colours for this stag. However, it is possible to find all sorts of wacky colourations depending on the environments they've been in. I've seen a purple one have one side go green from being contact with a green plating monti (this is called grafting)... so really, you just gotta look around if the other colours aren't your favs.

josie 10-07-2010 01:13 AM

thank you scubaSteve!
:)

I would really want a purple one some day :)
