LFS (Baseline Road by Home Depot) Sherwood Park

So on a recommendation from a fellow reefer I try this LFS in Sherwood Park... on Baseline.

I was told to go as they have some great prices.

Soooo.... I go in and buy an RBTA as it was nice and priced good.

As they are trying to get it off the rock.... I am praising their good pricing on livestock. Then the manager (tall bald guy - as not to mention his name) says he does not "rape" his customers.

So he then says sorry... the anemone will not come off the rock.... at this point all he did was hang the rock upside down. He said if it does not come off under its own weight you have to buy the rock. This rock was like 5-6 pounds I am sure. I ask how much rock was and he says $10.99/pound and then claims it is the best price in town????????? I advised him that it is definitely not the best price and reference AI. Then he said all the other stores must have crappy rock cause he loses money.

I suggested massaging the base or using a low flow power head to remove it. He refused. I MUST MENTION I HAD PAID FOR THIS 5 HOURS EARLIER AND WAS IN TO PICK IT UP AFTER WORK. He said the only way to get them off is under their own weight. SO the rock... under water... upside down. Thats his only attempt. Then I ask him to try one of the other two... he refused.

I mentioned I have about 5 years (which is definitely enough time to learn a thing or two) and have seen it done many times. Then he gets arrogant and says to me

"I have more experience than you and if you want to stress an animal I dont want you as a customer." - WTF???????? Years does not equal knowledge.

He was very rude at this point and I had done nothing but praise his good pricing and mention I am going to come back.

He may have more years but he does not have experience. I am very unhappy about this experience as a first time in the store. He was ignorant and arrogant about his superior knowledge.

I will never return to his store... and If I can manage to find out who his boss is.... I would love to discuss this with him.

***CANREEF STAFF - if there is something in here I should edit, or is not allowed... please advise and I WILL EDIT. PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EXPERIENCES GOOD AND BAD... and they are not a sponsor on here.... also I won't print the name as I refuse to advertise for them.

Are we talking xxxxx by Mr lube?....they dabbled in sw a few times only to shut it down again. They usually have awesome plecos there if your into FW. There used to be a guy there Nip Wah or however you spelled his name he was very smart when it came to fish but I don't think he works there anymore

Big Tang 10-06-2010 01:30 AM

This store has been there for a while, not a bad in pricing, except their frags were a little out to lunch, or so I think... I also found them very arrogant.

I've had to remove a GBTA from a rock once that never did let go. I tried hanging it upside down, massaging the base, pointing a powerhead at it, prying at the base with a credit card, leaving it un-submerged and even rubbing it with ice cubes. In the end I had to smash the rock and remove it with the fragments still attached to its foot. Anyone keeping anemones in a tank for sale should know to only have small rock rubble with them or should be prepared to grab a hammer and a chisel.

paddyob 10-06-2010 04:33 AM

Yup

BUT remember... this guy is VERY "EXPERIENCED" (in selling his customers huge chunks of rocks at $11/pound). He says he does not, and I quote.."rape his customers" but he sure tried to bend me over.

I think "the bald guys" prices are low because he has no service skills at all. Something has to draw people in.

I am gonna name drop.... his name is Shawn. I don't care. He was really insulting. Insinuating I do not treat my tanks well. In most cases I would have lost my temper.... but instead.... I have CANREEF to vent!!!

Thanks guys and gals for reading.

There is a saying.....

"You get good service you tell one person. You get bad service, you tell everyone."

I kind of wish nobody posted the store name.... it is free advertising for him in any way.

rokosd 10-06-2010 06:01 AM

I went to that store not too long ago. Never really had any encounters with that bald guy everyone hates. Asked a couple questions when I was there to see if the stafdf had any knowledge. Not impressed but not displeased either. Did not like the selection when I was there and prices on livestock arent too bad but anything else is pretty much the same. All in all I drove to calgary for fish shopping and I wont go back to the store in sherwood park. It is the only one in sherwood park I know of that has saltwater. And yes I agree that people in this hobby NEED to hear to bad with the good too or this **** will happen all the time to other people.

Yep. I had the pleasure of dealing with this guy. Manager. Didn't know much, but try to impress me. Fish prices are low but you better know your stuff, or you will get misinformed. Same thing... I have this experience in how many years. But when I asked him pointed questions, he knew nada.
Good price on those "rose" anemonies, though.
Stocks are never plentiful, and what he thinks are "rare", are not.

I am just glad its not just my experience. This guy acted like such a clown I was ready to lose my mind.

As soon as somebody says "I've been doing this for _ years" you know they don't know sh*t. This is true for any industry and deal with clients and customers like this all the time.

You should have asked him how they capture anemones in the wild, last time I checked the rocks these are found on are too heavy to lift and turn upside down. Also an anemone that can't support it's own weight isn't a healthy one and a bad idea for a reef tank. Idiot!

I can attest to that, I gladly admit that my experience with SW is <5 years, but the amount of knowledge I have aquired is current and still growing.

I will never admit knowing more than anyone, there is no guage relation to experience and knowledge. That is why I make it quite clear to our staff if you are not sure, or don't know, do not be afraid to admit it.

So you spend 6 years to graduate a 2 year course, does that make you smarter than those that graduated in less time? definately not.

From my own personal experience, people that imply themselves they are the expers in the field, usually are far from it. Being an "EXPERT" is a title that is given to you by others, not a title you give yourself.

Just my 2c,

Ken - BWA
