Counting hobbyists in BC

Hello everyone, I am a Psychology student at UBC, and was wondering if I could get some help. I am trying to do a census of all hobbyists in the province of BC. This is for a paper that I am doing about the link between aquariums and lowering the stress levels in those who own them. I could really use the help and thank all of you that respond.

If you respond please respond here or through my email, I do not need names if you would fell better not to leave them, but I do need location.

Thank you so much for your time

Cloverdale, but I'm not too sure if this hobby "lowers" your stress levels.

christyf5 10-05-2010 04:48 PM

Nanaimo and ditto on those stress levels  I do enjoy my tank but between the cyano, majanos, fish nipping my clams and monotony of waterchanges I'm not sure about the lowering of stress levels.

This is also an interest of mine, especially now as I am doing a little experiment looking into the relationship between stress and certain cognitive functions. While I do believe my tank can be stress reducer I must admit, the hobby certainly can be a stressor when things go bad!

Out of curiosity, how does knowing how many/where BC hobbyists relate to whether or not being a hobbyist has any effect on stress levels?

At any rate: Victoria

Good luck on your paper.

It certainly CAUSES stress in my household when the Visa bill arrives!

(Already posted location - Burnaby) but usually lowers stress level but when my 225 blew out and dumped over 130g of sw on my floors, that didn't help my stress level at all.

Lowers stress most of the time, when everything is going good.

Victoria. My tank has caused me more stress in the last two years than I can possibly describe!!

But I think the 90/10 rule applies 90% of the time it makes my stress level at 10% and 10% of the time it is 90% of my stress  Double so when 80 gal of saltwater overflows the sump, striaght down the vent and into the furnace.... Not a happy day.

lol Note that in the first post of this thread he only says hobbyists and aquariums. Nowhere does it say saltwater or reef. He must be confusing us with those easy going freshwater people.

Hello again

I thank everyone so far for their input and look forward to more. To answer the question as to why i am taking the census, I am counting the amount of people in BC who have aquariums more for my own knowledge because I truly have no idea. I understand that keeping a saltwater system can be stressful but the idea I am going on is proof that the sights and sounds of an aquarium especially saltwater can be very calming. Once again thank you for the input so far and please keep it coming.

bvlester 10-06-2010 07:05 AM

I'd say stess relief for my self and the kids.
The wife is starting to sit infront of the tanks now..Must be working she keeps finding things for me to buy for the tanks...

Bill
