Pretty Dumb Question

So how do you open the bucket of reef crystals? It has a new lid and I cant figure out an easy way to open it after struggling for 5-10 mins... Do I need to cut it at all or whats the deal?

Wayne 10-04-2010 04:10 AM

LOL most lids nowadays you have to remove the bottom 1cm usually by pulling the strip off then just pry up on the 6 or so tabs... What brand? Picture?

Snufflupagus 10-04-2010 04:13 AM

Lol if it's like the buckets I have you should be able to just screw off the lid.

Eb0la11 10-04-2010 04:16 AM

Its different from both lids you guys have described. Theres no tab to pull on that would remove a 1 inch strip, and the old screw ones, which Im familiar are no longer being used, apparently...

This new one is basically just like a sleek kind of looking lid that doesnt budge...

Tiger Torch! Pretty sure it will come off within a minute

Good luck hopefully someone else has come across!

I think this one is just missing the tab or something, maybe a defective lid, there seems to be a seem that a tab would open along. I'll figure it out. Might just have to hack job this one.

If there is a seam then get the side cutters out and make a tab to pull on...

Try hitting the inside ridge on the top of the lid with a hammer, if it's a twist top lid, or hit the bottom of the lid in an upwards motion with a hammer if it's a pull off lid.

picts would help. But i am sure there must be instruction on the lid of how to open it. Good luck

Have one of the new pails (not the hammer type), pulled the tab and about 1/2 the circumference came off and appeared to break clean but couldn't open. Ends up the all of it all needs to come off but needed side cutters to restart.

Years ago when I worked at a restaurant we got a lot of bulk food in 5g pails with no tabs or screw off lids. We just took a metal spatula or large knife and whacked the top corner of the lid in 6-7 places (must actually cut through the lid) and then peeled the lid right off.

lockrookie 10-05-2010 03:51 AM

it just may be a faulty lid. i would cut it off after 10 min of cursing and prolly have a blood sacrifice in between.

on a side note how many reefers does it take to open a pail of salt??? sorry froce of habit for newfie jokes.

lobsterboy 10-05-2010 07:14 AM

so did you get it open ? if not bring it to the calgary reef meet on thursday.

Eb0la11 10-05-2010 07:13 PM

I got it open, made my own tab like one of the users suggested. I think it was just a faulty lid. I miss the old screw on ones though...

Me too. I use IO for half my tanks, and these new lids suck. I broke a nail opening my last bucket!!! I`m changing to the 200 gal boxes instead.

madkeenreefer 10-05-2010 10:00 PM

Doubt its default lid , the new IO salts have a new lid as mentioned, like you said the lid has a seam and its here you should find a small tab to pull and it will after removal leave 4 tabs on the lid.
