It's not actually a larva. They have gills like that as adults. Still sorta cute :P.

saw these today in Big A's calgary today , pretty neat looking little guy's

super interesting species to keep. they are actually a salamander species that do not undergo the "metamorphasis" phase therefore keeping gills and remaining completely aquatic. waterdogs are the larvae of tiger salamnders.. just thought i'd share a bit of reptile info for all lol.

Sorry I'll correct myself by saying they are an amphibian as they are part of the salamander family. They are only found in Mexico, where as the mudpuppy you are thinking of is north American, and although similar looking, 2 totally different species. Proper name for the picture above is "axolotl".
