NHL 10/11

Shame on all of you!
I spent the better part of the afternoon and could not find ONE thread devoted to hockey. And you call yourselves Canadians.... For shame...

So what are all your thoughts on the upcoming season?
You guys think Hall, Eberle, and Mags will bring the oil out of the gutter?

Lance 09-02-2010 09:49 PM

This is the year of the Canucks! Made some pretty good moves in the off- season. Certainly top 5 in offence and now a pretty good looking defence. The ruling on Luongo's contract tomorrow has me a little worried though. If they have to rewrite it, they will be over the cap and someone will have to be moved.
As for the Oilers, they should be much improved and exciting to watch with all the youthful talent. Still a few years away though. Won't make the playoffs IMO.
I think the Flames will make the playoffs in the 7th or 8th position, but I doubt they'll make it through the 1st round. (Especially so, if they have to play Vancouver.)

Vikingstad 09-02-2010 10:01 PM

Yeah Vancouver will just get to the second round and start choking again XD

The Oilers are going to fail again, they will put WAAAYYY too much pressure on the 3 kids and they wont be allowed to blossom and be stuck as mediocre players at best.
Calgary just sucks.

What do you think of the Habs letting Halak go?

Veng68 09-02-2010 10:12 PM

I just hope they get a CBA extended otherwise 2012-2013 is going to be a hellva long year....... probably a lockout if they hire Fehr :P

Another lockout will really **** me off!!!

Oilers are going to need a year or 2 to get back into it.

Canucks will make it into the playoffs and hopefully at least make it into the conference finals.

Cheers,
Vic

KennyKen 09-02-2010 10:16 PM

First off let me congratulate you on being a wings fan.

Lets give the run down of Canadian teams.

Vancouver will be good again, will most likely win the division, but top 5 in offence...lets not get carried away here

Calgary will have a brutal start, and Darryl will look like even more of an idiot when Tanguay and Joke-inen struggle, leading to the ineveitable end of the sutter era in Calgary

Edmonton, bottom of the NW division again

Ottawa should have another solid run this year, playoffs? maybe.

As much as it pains me to say it, Toronto actually could fight for a the 8th seed come the end of the season. I really dont want this to happen as i have a $1000 bet with a friend that the leafs will not make the playoffs in 10 years...this will be year 6.

Montreal is gonna struggle, and they made a huge mistake sticking with Price. This kid needs a change of scenery....im surprised Sutter didnt make a bonehead move for him.

Stanley Cup Prediction....yikes.

Detroit vs Pittsburgh

Due to my awesome hookups, and the fact that I played with Magnus and Björn before I killed my back, Magnus hopes to sign with a team that has another Timrċ alumni signed for the next 9 years. Once his contract with the oil wears off. So I am excited for that.

I have a similar bet, except mine goes like: If the Leafs win the cup before I die my entire inheritance is left to my friend, if he dies before they win, I get his whole inheritance, and his parents are Oilsheiks...

Its going to be a Wings-Philly final this year, on the condition that Leighton can stop a shot. But I hope Lidstrom can retire with a shiny new championship ring on his finger.

Van is in the NW div right? The only competition in there is the Flames.

What makes you say that? Look at the numbers! The 'Nucks were #2 in scoring last year (272 goals Only Washington scored more goals, and only Washington and Chicago had a better +/- goal differential) Shouldn't be any different this year; maybe even better with a healthy Daniel all season.

I didn't really consider it a choke. They just plain got beat by a better team. Chicago outplayed them in nearly every facet of the game. Lucky for us the Hawks are considerably weaker this year.

Canucks or Wings from the West. Penguins from the East. (Leighton is unproven. If he can duplicate what he did in the playoffs, then I pick Philly).

Vikingstad 09-02-2010 11:37 PM

Leighton just has to play decently, doesn't have to be a stud, cause their studly defense will do all the studly stuff necessary.

If it was a wings-nucks CF then I would have to go with the Wings firstly cause I am a fan, and secondly, their depth is amazing this year. Especially if Tatar, I. Filppula, or Ritola get full time spots on the team.

Was that sarcasm or a "what colour is your bandwagon" statement??

This ruling tomorrow could have a huge impact on a few teams seasons. Personally, I think this cap circumvention crap should be eliminated. I much prefer to see parity in a league.

Being a Canuck fan I knew that, but what I really think he was saying with " but top 5 in offence...lets not get carried away here" was that he doesn'y know what he is talking about and only follows his team.

I agree, it's gotta be a level playing field. I don't blame New Jersey for being ****ed. You can't allow Vancouver, Chicago and whoever else to sign stars to these long term contracts to cheat the cap and then suddenly decide the Devils can't do it.

Awww Doug! Sucks to not have a team anymore. Do you cheer for the Coyotes?

Vikingstad 09-03-2010 01:04 AM

I still cant believe that there are teams in the southern states. Like FLA and TB cant GIVE away tickets. But there are cities in Canada and a few states that would kill for a franchise and have every game sold out before the team even finished packing their bags!

Doesn't make a lot of sense does it? It's time Bettman let it go. It's not gonna happen! The majority of Americans aren't interested in hockey.

No, just when they were in Winnipeg. I have been a life long Wings fan though. And thats some period of time.

I now kind of cheer for the sad sack Leafs. Not sure why though.

Vikingstad 09-03-2010 01:30 AM

Delicious.....
I mean Red Wings.

Ps- Flyers fan... How does it feel to know God hates your goalie?

pelle31 09-03-2010 02:07 AM

Red Wings? As in BBQ sauce????

God may hate him but at least we have one!!

Vikingstad 09-03-2010 05:53 AM

Howard FTW!
And I shouldn't beak, Philly is my EC team.

Raven34 09-03-2010 06:08 AM

Still an Edmonton fan but they will trade away Hall and Eberly for a 5 found pick a third string tender and maybe resign Peter Klima.

Vikingstad 09-03-2010 07:00 AM

I think they had their eyes on Terry Sawchuk, or even G. Howe.

ElGuappo 09-03-2010 08:04 AM

first off there have been hockey treads here.... the last one if i remember correcly was about how stupid it was for iginla to get a gordy howe hatrick... not my thread i think he should fight...

screw the wings and canuckle heads.. go flames...

RIGHT...

while they are my team they SUCK. iggy is past his prime and we need to move him while he has market value... resigning OJ is a joke yes but tanguay i think may be able to do close to what he did last time he was here...

the flames need to start rebuilding.. they have been building a team around iggy for a decade now and it isnt working.... we need more young blood... if you didnt watch the last olypics here it is hockey is now a young mans game.. with all the new rules about hooking etc the more "experienced players" cant keep up and are finding rolls in places like the 3rd line and special teams... this isnt nessisarily a bad thing but the flames pay too much for these players.

i have to start cheering for the leafs this year i dont have a choice... my cousin signed an entry level contract out of cornell with them... he was up for the hobbie baker last year.. ben scrivens if your interested.

EDIT: oh yeah sutter needs to step down.... he was a far better coach than GM

Cleary somebody hasn't seen Lidstrom play.

Doesnt that suck when you are forced to cheer for a team? My GF is from Luleċ and makes me cheer for them whenever we watch the SEL games.

Veng68 09-03-2010 08:26 AM

The problem with Iggie is that there is no one to play with him. You get him a playmaker and he will light it up.

As much as I hate his frigging smile after he scores on my Nucks (makes me want to hulk smash his face).......... I would love to have him on my team and I am sure any other team would be glad to have him.

Cheers,
Vic

well of course there are exceptions....

the flames have spent he last 6 years trying to find a playmaker and they unwilling to nut up for one and the mediocre guys they keep bringing in are sub par so the flames need to either nut up or shut up..

oh and i hate kipper iss too streaky and unreliable... this may have something to do with the fact he plays too many games in my opinion.

could be because its still summer hollidays and training camps have barley started ...

having said that, I think it will be an interesting year for our westren teams. Vancouver should be about the same as they were last year, but they did sign rafi torres, so we'll see how he does.

I think the team to watch this year will be Edmonton, and not just because I am a die hard Oilers fan, but because of some high quality tallent comming in this year, and because of some interesting off season trades and new signings.

Habby is going to be back in good health, Hemsky is skating and feeling good (thoes two being out was the demise of edmonton last year)
now they also have an infusion of Hall, Eberly, and Paajarvi (if they all make the team. on the d side they picked up whitney late last season, who was already looking good, plus a couple others. If they can get a good trade for Souray, or he decides he wants to be in edmonton after all, or at least play hard till he can get a trade, the Dside looke real good.

leaving us whith the weakest part of the team after habby left. with habby back, and the signing of Gerber on a two way contract, I think your going to see some exceptional goal tending as they fight for the top two spots.

Wasnt Khabibhulin fired after his whole DUI shenanigans?

That would be awesome if they did that. First you have what a 3 mil a year Dman that doesn't want to play, then fire your 3 mil starting goalie. Dunno if those are the numbers or not cause I don't follow Edmonton but theres no way they can do that!!

Just checked 4.5 and 3.7!!

nope, they just did a press release yesterday saying he exercised his right to apeal, and will be at training camp. he will probably end up doing about 9 days and be back intime for the start of the season. if they fired him for that, what do they do with anyone else in the NHL that gets in trouble? what about the kid who killed the other player, or the countless DUIs?

its not like this is the first time a profesional hockey player has gotten in trouble with the law..

there is a conduct clause in the standard NHL contract which could be used to void a contract, but look at burtusi, and others that are still playing..

If Edmonton is planning on using this clause they are not acting like it, but seeing as they have Gerber, and Des. and Des was playing not to bad last year..... who knowes.

Steve
