You know that is absolutely right, and amazing. I just would like to know why every spelling mistake seems to jump off the page at me, and bugs me.  It may have something to do with being an immigrant, and a natural speller. When I came to Canada, and went to grade six in Flin Flon, Manitoba, I was the best speller in the room in a matter of weeks. Yet I could not speak the language.

Now this is an interesting change in this conversation.
Good to see others from Manitoba north. During my 30 yrs. in Thompson, I made many trips to Flin Flon, mostly for bowling. Had many friends from there. |
It really is a small world. We left Flin Flon when I was 14, so that is close to 50 years ago.
|
 My Dad wasn't even born then
|
Dad's family is from Winnipeg (I was born there), and Mom's family is from beautiful Shoal Lake.
Dad got smart and moved west... But not west enough! |
We all got smart and moved out west. I once mentioned I was in Calgary in 1971. Stayed for a year, then went back to Thompson, as I missed the money to much.
My youngest brother stayed and is still there and the middle brother moved to BC. Guess I,m the only faithful flatlander. |
Boy Doug, 777 posts! And you celebrate with a cool new avatar!
  |
Yeah, but he looks like an AFR in that Avatar.
:rainbowa: ; :B-fly: ; :multi: |
You're padding your post count again, Bob...
  |
Have to try and stay ahead of you Alan.
:smilecol: ; :2gunfire: |
I have to say, I've noticed some really bad spelling lately. It seems to be getting worse and worse. I'm concerned about Canada's education system.
|
Yes it has become absolutely atrocious. I am wondering if the school system is really trying. As an example I don't want to name names hehe, but a horrible example is the new Northern member haha. I hope I am being noncommittal enough.

the problem with the younger generation is there dependence upon word processers with spell check.
My self, well lets just say way back when (Bob you might remember this) Canada though that it might be better to teach children to spell phoneticly when they are first learning to spell. as a result of this they set up test groups which consisted of classes in random schools though out Canada. needless to say the first crack at "hooked on phonics" was a utter failure as they didn't plan for the transition from phonetioc spelling to proper spelling. unfortunatly I was in one of the test classes. Steve |
No, I was not aware of that. Remember I was an immigrant, who started in grade six in Canada. It does explain a lot though.

but ya you would have been past that level by then. Steve |
I was just taught English as a first language...
|
Thanks Alan.
Ok Bob, gotta ask what the "A" is in AFR. |
Sorry Doug, you got me  , it should be an "O"

OFR, that would be me.
|
 Doug, I thought that it was "ORF" (for "Old Retired Fart" or something like that)...
 No? |
Old Fart Reefer Guess your version would fit also. |
Thats amazing
One divided your right. Thats amazing. I could read what you wrote and it was totally misspelt. (sp) Sorry Bob.
