little 33 zoa tank ****updated with pics jan 15****
a little peek at what ive been cooking up over the last few weeks its my new iddy biddy display, use to be my 33g mixed reef with a little bit of sps, i got rid of pretty much it all and went in a different direction added some softies and lps ,threw in a small unbrella and a carpet anemone(thanks to noirsphynx) added a deper sandbed , livestock are just a pair of cinnamon clowns and a lonely pj (pj is awaiting new home) . the light is just a metal halide light i put together using a couple old fixtures i had building up(1x250w).
id like to add something unique in the way of fish or invertebrate im just not sure what would love some suggestions(pj is awaiting new home) http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/att...1&d=1280450955 http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/att...1&d=1280450955 http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/att...1&d=1280451365http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/att...1&d=1280451365 |

She's looking nice and happy
|
it truely is the most beautiful carpet ive ever seen in person settled in perfectly and clown hosted immediately its the first anemone shes truely hosted she hasnt left more than an inch or two since they met, now if she would just take to her new mate and i would be sailing:)
|
Looking good except the pics are too tiny. Where'd all the zoas come from?
|
i know lol is there a way to make them bigger through photo bucket??
most of the zoas i got from different people couple heads here couple there , they were starting to get lost in my display because of bigger corals so when i got this carpet tank changed over i figured hey zoas are something small i can stick close to the sandbed where the carpet wont run em over if it ever went walking lol:) i also just got some frags from kevin and doug from red coral, very nice colours(thanks again guys:) plus some deep water zoas from aquarium illusions im shootin for a zoanthid valley with a liverock mountain housing a magnificant blue carpet and cinn clowns and an unbrella top untill it gets to big for there lol:) theres also a small snowflake eel in there too the mountain is built around pvc piping you cant really see so he doesnt topple anything hell go in my display when hes bigger or when the crabs drive me nuts enough to put himn in there:):) |
humm think i got it figured lol:):)

Yup, that's better, lol. I like the zoa valley idea. I got some stuff from Red Coral not long ago too, nice stuff!
|
very nice stuff i asked them do do a surprise pak and i mean they could have threw in the brownest least attractive zoo's but they gave me a very nice variety i was super happy with them ill be getting more they are my zoa store now lol:)
i liked the valley idea cause theres no reason for the carpet to go down it and its made so the carpet is on an overhang and would be difficult to crawl down although not impossible:) the biggest problem im having is the aiptasia in the valley and on the hill its everywhere and as soon as i put a frag down boom a head pops up, i dont want to remove the filefish from my display but im leaning towards it the proble is the filefish isnt exactly a fast swimmer and is curious im hoping that it has the sense to stay away from the carpet :):) |
ok so after selling all my tanks im left with just my little 33 ive had to sell the carpet and most of the bigger corals for room so now this is pretty much my zoa tank untill the new 200g is up and running around christmas
time:) cheers hope you like the pics:):) heres a fts:) http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287338849 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287339079 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287339117 thanks to jeff(vitaminz) for these next pics:) http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287339384 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287339429 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287339459 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287339489 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287339521 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1287339564 |

Your Zoa tank reminds me of mine, minus the Valonia! We have a lot of the same Zoas too. :D Where'd ya get the Tonga branch from? I need some for my tank!! Looks good...maybe I missed it, but how long have you had it set up?
|
in the first couple of pictures i see the lid of your tank. what is it made of?
im trying to fit a lid to my 5g and looking for the best result |

thanks mindy , too bad ive let the tank go to hell lately, i battling a brutal aiptasi problem , like 300 heads in a 33g :( i have a filefish whos starting to make a dent but just about all my zoas are sandbed ridden and they all have aiptasia growing from them, it makes me sad that its gone this far but im slowly making ground ive been breeding berghias but they take too long and in fear of losing my tank i had to buy the file fish:) all my zoas are still alive but ive lost some because of the aiptasia lucky they were common and not rare.ive been thinking about moving some of the rare ones to my roomates ten gallon but i dont want to introduce aiptasia into his tank :( the tank has been running for almost 3 yrs its gone through about a million changes it started off as a fish only then it went through several mixed reefs untill i decided a few months ago it would be my zoa only tank.i had all my zoas in my 110g and 180g but they werent growing good and they had very little color then when i moved them to this system they started growing like crazy lol im loving the tonga branch i got it off a friend who ordered to much so it was pressure washed and given to me and i love what its done to my tank it went purple in a week and now is a really nice purple and blends in completely it stood out for a bit and looked weird where it was white lol:) i have a few pieces left over if your ever in town its not much just a couplke pounde but if your ever in edmonton you can have it free of charge its never hit my tank yet so no aiptasia its in my liverock bin so its " live " but there doesnt be a whole lot of life on it as theres not really any holes its solid branch so it needs to be mixed with other rock is what i was told:) right now the tank is horribly full lol i have about 50lbs or more in that tank i had 35lbs in there then added 20lbs of branch and used black tie straps to keep the branch together and have it wrap around my other rock, the branch doesnt stack well and i was fearful my snowflake eel would topple it without the straps. we do have alot of the same zoas lol i usually buy a small frag when ever i get to a store and i have alot of reef friends in edmonton who have zoas as well so ive been lucky to get frags off them here and there:)when i last counted i was up to 47 different kinds:) lately ive been looking for rare ones, i placed a thread looking for rare zoas with a list of what i wanted and to my surprise ive gotten alot of replies with people willing to make a frag:) when my new tank is up and running i want to have one of the sections a zoa only but im afraid to tear down my 33 its been running so long lol kinda attached to it now:) sorry the pics arent great im going to take some pics of all my zoas as soon as i can get a decent camera all my pics are done on my phone and i cant really get fts or a good shot of my zoas:( everyone always says my pics dont do it justice so id love for someone with a real camera come over and help me get some pics but i need to solve my aiptasia and weed problem first:) mindy do the tonga branch i think your tank would look so nice with it ive also got some pieces of small rock that are in cool shapes kinda like christmas trees its like a mix of branch and fiji lol:) ill try to get some more pics soon of my new zoas when my roomate comes home hes got a better phone camera than me:) cheers:) |

Thanks for the offer on the Tonga branch! I just might take you up on that as I will be heading to Blue World for a clam in a couple weeks. I really think the Tonga branch is the only type that will look good in my tank since my tank is such an odd shape. Wow, that's awesome that you got replies! I was going to reply as I have a few you're looking for, but I don't have the time to frag and pack up and all that. If you're still looking next spring maybe we can do a trade then since I won't be working out of province anymore. |

i love the look of them as well most think they are ugly but when you own one you start to realize how beautiful they are lol:) im keeping my eye on this guy because i know they are reefsafe with alot of caution and especially since my guy is very young about the size of a loonie while my other one was full grown im watching what he considers food , i have seen him suck in the arms of aiptasi but im crossing my fingers he doesnt drift to corals :) if you come to blue world give me a heads up and i will dig out the branch i have left i was in the same boat my zoa tank is small really so adding round rock wasnt an option i played with my tonga branch in my quarantine tank for a while then decided i would aquascape, without tiestraps i dont think i could of had the high branch that overhangs in my tank:) heres some recent pics please for give the aiptasia im so mad right now that i let it become this when i could have injected them long ago but i had bigger tanks and didnt care so much now that this is my only tank im looking back saying how stupid i was:( cheers :) sorry for the pics they are phone pics:) http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...2033/053-1.jpg http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289166823 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1289167080 |

finally a tank again:)
after all week of cleaning up the zoa tank and getting things back to the way they were im finally making some progress, aiptasia is down to under 100heads ive spent most of the days getting alot of the bigger ones with lemon juice so far its worked again:) all parameters are good calicum is back to 460 and nitrates and phosphates are very low:) ive been doing alot of water changes and running alot of new carbon and it shows lol the tank is looking great.my sea hare is starting to finish up and ive been mowing all i can.cyano has been sucked out with a baster and it seems to be staying gone for a bit:) alot of my zoas are now opening again as ive gotten the aiptasia in them.
im so happy ive bought a couple additions the first is a elegance with purple tips and the second is a mulit colony of zoas rather large with about 4-5 different colonies on them.:) cheers!!:):) http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1290121491 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1290121491 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1290121558 now for the zoas ;) http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1290121558 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1290121558 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1290121558 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1290121556 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1290121556 |

Tank looks nice I like the shape and rock placement.
Just some friendly help it looks like you have some decent algae growth you might want to think about some sort of control. Like a emerald crab for that bubble algae and some snails etc. If you don't it will take over and kill your corals. Some of the Zoe's are kind of closed they will be a lot more happy if you have bare rocks with no algae. I know that you have skimmer less but you might want to get one to help with your algae. Really nice picture of your elegance coral. |
Do you have an ID on that purple Gorg? It's nice!

yeah ive been doing some work to get things back to normal, all my old rock doesnt have any algae on it but the tonga branch seems to attract it very easily.when i first set up the tank a couple years ago i figured i would let algae grow on the back and sides.....i managed to get rid of it all and this year it all came back.i have gave up on this tank this year and now that my big ones are sold im working on making this look nicer.this tank will be torn down in late december early january and will be going in the new 200g so im trying not to buy to much for equipment.i am going to be buying a phosban reactor here though this week.:) |
never a dull ride!!!!
well its been a tough week on the ol tank my elegance has died and i am down my female cinnamon clown whom ive had forever , it was hosting the elegance and with the elegance being in the sand my eel was not happy about the shared territory and fought with the clown, it killed the elegance and clown.
also i am now proud to say i am aiptasia free i had about 300 heads in my 33g tank and i put in my filefish and he cleaned it right out.i removed the file fish and gave him his lay off papers this evening i told him good job but i just dont think my tank is gonna be a long term carrer for him.....he looked a me fluttered a bit then went on to eat some more of my zoas....grrrr:) so far hes eaten my candy canes, hammer, xenia, numerous zoas including nuclear greens, red people eaters......to say the least weve been on bad terms and hes nothing like my last filefish.....this one was very young and i got him right out of the box.....my last one was an adult and was living tank life for a while:):) heres some pics of the tank and some new coral, i had to replace the nuclear greens my filefish ate with some more and since hes out of the tank i thought its time to add some nicer ones:) cheers http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563273 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563273 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563512 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563512 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563512 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563512 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563512 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563512 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563512 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563512 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563654 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563654 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1292563654 |

was bored so i did up a ittle vid of the zoa tank...crappy vid though lol
my aiptasia is returning im guessing the smallest heads are growing now so my filefish is back in business if he eats my nuclear greens this time i swear its the porcelain express he goes lol(kidding) all in all though so far so good for round two. i also added a dual brs media reactor tonight so i have gfo in one and carbon in the other im out to get my algae problem brought down a notch.....now recently ive been dealing with a fair bit of valonia ive always had it but now its spreading so ive been dealing with it slowly removing what i can thats loose. heres a quick tour of the little 33:):) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EROt-NevV3c |
cool vid dude there are a few types of zoas in there that id like to get ahold of lol
|
I see some zoas and paly's that have my name all over them:biggrin:
|
Thanks guys , too bad the camera only shows half of them as it's a crappy phone vid and it's always my luck that my bigger colonies are closed come picture time lol:)

well its a love and hate relationship with the ol zoa tank i started running gfo and carbon through reactor and im sooo surprised on how effective it is, phosphates were becoming a problem so the gfo is now taking hold and all my algae is clearing up im picking out what i can and for the first time in 3 yrs i can see through the back panel of glass.
the hate side of it is some of my zoas are dying and not new ones, ones ive had for quite some time i have a real nice green zoa colony that is melting away for no reason and same with some others im not sure if its my filefish (who im watching like a hawk) or a result from the carbon/gfo my filefish is known to eat zoas but he usually does it pretty clean like a head here and a head there not about 10heads in one day, and im curious if it could be a result of the newly added gfo as ive always ran carbon.....is it possible the ones ive had for a long time are just used to the phosphates and no feel " weird" in the cleaner water???....well cant wait to get the new tank up and running im also considering donating a pile of zoa frags to someone for a back up in case this gets worse anytime soon so i dont lose any more im at around 65 kinds and i dont want to go down in numbers so i think a back uplan is in order:) anyone feel like brighting up their tank with some zoa frags??:):) another plus side my water parameters have never been better nitrates and phosphates are nil and mag, cal, alk are steady, no more temp swings,no more liquid foods minus some zooplankton and im seeing bright oranges, greens, purples and reds coming out into my liverock now that aiptasia and hair algae are gone.cyano is no more:):) anywho lol heres afts taken tonight:):) fts: http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1294559007 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1294559007 randoms: http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1294559007 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1294559007 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1294559007 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1294559007 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1294559007 and i like this one i got some light blueish palys off of bluetang<3 a while back and i broke it up and gave a few to friends and kept a few well some have drifted off and they seem to anchor in the sand and like it.but one in particular has popped up right in between my nuclear grens and my purple deaths and i think he was trying to blend in and be cool like the rest of the bunch....silly silly silly:) hes dead in the center of the two colonys lol:) http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1294559007 cheers:):) |
man that gfo is really doing an amazing job, as it stands now all my algae is just about gone all 4 sides are cleaned down to new glass ,all my long hair algae is completely gone and so now is my sea hare(gonna miss you guy)
still suffering some mystery deaths with some zoas...hardy ones ive had forever but for some reason i dont think my filefish is the cause although im sure hes helping....tonight im looking for nudis and hoping i find nothing :):) i borrowed a camera tonight and got some pics of new zoas and the how clean the new tank is:):) cheers:) http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1295076351 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1295076351 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1295076351 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1295076351 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1295076351 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1295076351 http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...g?t=1295076351 |
